lindsey - 2013-05-27 not really a story but question. please help my guppy has been behaving vey strange lately. it seems he is getting tired, one minute he swimming around and the next he is resting at the bottom of the tank, I mean like laying there. he is stilling sitting straight and using his fins but he is literally touching the gravel. please help me

Clarice Brough - 2013-05-28 Without knowing the tank size, type of filtration, how long the tank's been set up, and the tankmates, its difficult to know what's happening. The usual reason for fish to have problems is water quality, followed by tankmate aggression. If you've determined there are not problems with tankmates, then the first thing to do is see if the filtration is working properly. Then check for ammonia with a test kit to determine if there are problems with the water quality. A partial water change is usually needed.

They are fast swimmers and I know they can be pretty aggressive, so not sure I want to risk these beautiful little fish in there, but they sure are pretty!

The only problem (for non breeders) with combining the sexes with guppies is you will have babies. Guppies are live bearers and multiply often. If you don't want babies you should only keep one sex.

kye turnbull - 2013-05-11 the prob is they are all midgets, the males only grow to a centimeter and they got sick after taking a 10 minute drive (i live on the mountain about 45 minutes away from any pet shops).

Clarice Brough - 2013-01-11 There are all sorts of small fish that are peaceful with guppies including other live bearers, tetras (characins), danios and rasboras (cyprinids), and even some of the small cat fish like coryadoras. The most important things are that they are small enough that they can't fit the guppy in their mouth and they are peaceful fish.

Jeremy Roche - 2013-01-30 You can raise temp a couple degrees and add some aquarium salt to about 1.002 salinity. Can also dip the fish in a higher concentrate for 30 seconds. Do weekly 25% water changes till gone. I would then add some ick guard to the tank. Other option is getting medications. Continue feeding just make sure not to overfeed.

They are quite peaceful.but now I am seeing that little groups of smaller guppies are often chasing a bigger single guppy. There are about 10 bigger guppies which are being chased by the smaller ones. They simply chase the bigger one around for some time and then let it go. There are no other signs of aggression like nipping fins or fighting with each other. Are they just playing? Is there anything to worry about? I cannot identify the males or females, because they are way too small and always moving about, so I could not see their gonopodiums. Also how long do guppies live?

I wouldn't worry too much unless you actually see wounds showing up and ripped and shredded fins. Then you might want to separate the ones who seem to be getting bullied. Guppies don't have that long of lifespans - maybe 2 or 3 years if well cared for.

You can buy salt at most petstores , Walmart too. Once you get it there are instructions on the back. A good brand is API.
