I have had a tank with Mollies and Platies set up for about five years. Of course they have bred well over the years and it has always been interesting to see what will come from them. A few months ago I started to notice that some of the younger males were sporting what looked like a swordtail. I have often seen these fish in the pet store, but I have never bought one. Is it possible that through their interbreeding they have created the swordtail? It's very difficult to tell if they are from the Mollies or the Platies.

Yes if one of the fish bred with a swordtail before you got it.

In January i got 3 girl platys (orange) and a girl and a boy black platy. Since then they have bred and had babies, which have grown up and have had more babies, and the cycle keeps going. I'm telling you to not put boy and girl platies together! Since January I have now 25 boys And 35 girls in my 29 gallon tank! They are still breeding! And now i have spotted baby platys, what am i going to do! Recently the boys where breding so hard that some of the girls had died. I started out with one boy and ended up with 50! Do not put boys and girls together!

My kids have a 20gal tank. We purchased 3 Red Platies & 3 Yellow Platies,... one of each kids looks large in the belly for about 2 weeks now. I wonder how long it takes for them to have babies.

I don't see a breed of platy here that I currently breed. It may be a subclass but I was under the impression that high fin platy's were a breed of their own within the platy family.

HighFin Platys, are a fin variation within the genus 'Xiphophorus', or Platy.

I have two cory cats and three platies. Is it better to get more platies in my ten gallon tank?

I am fairly new to the platy world. I bought my 1st trio in early May this year, keeping them in my 10 gallon as a temp home, was looking for a 20-30 gallon tank at that point anyway. I then had 1 white male with a couple of tiny black dots on either side of his body right before his tail, the 2 females are orange and black calico, I think. 1 female has been pregnant seems like most of the time I've had her, the other has just gotten a little bigger, but never dropped fry to my knowledge. Then I bought 2 female jumbo tri colour and 3 blue tux, 1 male 2 female, the male disappeared that night and 1 of the tri colour died under questionable circumstances, my husband played shakira waka waka beside the tank and an hour later the fem tri was upside down on the bottom with a hole in her head, shakira and shaun killed my fish lol. Last weekend I added 3 new platy, 2 males and 1 female, the m/f pair were bright yellow on the front half and bright orange on the back half, then a similar smaller male mickey mouse. I lost the mickey and the new female in less than a week, not sure why.
Now I have almost 20 babies ranging from 2 months to a few days, but because the 1st 3 came from a mixed tank, I have what looks so far like orange and black calicos and something of a blue variety, my 2 month old is a pearly blue white with a little black showing up now, thinking maybe blue or blue tux possibly.

Is there anywhere I can find all colours available so I can find out what I have, and what these newer babies might be when they get all their adult colour?

Hi,
I think that my guppy is pregnant but she has a pinkish gravid spot. Does this mean that she has already given birth or is she about to?

Did anybody have any successful breeding between plates and swordtails if so can you please explain how did you make them mate what plants you had in your tank and when they mated thanks

Platies, and Swordtails can only mate, and produce genetically stable offspring, as they are very genetically alike. However, it is best to simply breed Swordtails, with Swordtails, and Platies, with Platies. However, if you do wish to breed them, male Swordtails will mate with female platies, under adequate water conditions, such as a stable, and peaceful community aquarium. 1 male per three females, is best.
