I have two cory cats and three platies. Is it better to get more platies in my ten gallon tank?

I am fairly new to the platy world. I bought my 1st trio in early May this year, keeping them in my 10 gallon as a temp home, was looking for a 20-30 gallon tank at that point anyway. I then had 1 white male with a couple of tiny black dots on either side of his body right before his tail, the 2 females are orange and black calico, I think. 1 female has been pregnant seems like most of the time I've had her, the other has just gotten a little bigger, but never dropped fry to my knowledge. Then I bought 2 female jumbo tri colour and 3 blue tux, 1 male 2 female, the male disappeared that night and 1 of the tri colour died under questionable circumstances, my husband played shakira waka waka beside the tank and an hour later the fem tri was upside down on the bottom with a hole in her head, shakira and shaun killed my fish lol. Last weekend I added 3 new platy, 2 males and 1 female, the m/f pair were bright yellow on the front half and bright orange on the back half, then a similar smaller male mickey mouse. I lost the mickey and the new female in less than a week, not sure why.
Now I have almost 20 babies ranging from 2 months to a few days, but because the 1st 3 came from a mixed tank, I have what looks so far like orange and black calicos and something of a blue variety, my 2 month old is a pearly blue white with a little black showing up now, thinking maybe blue or blue tux possibly.

Is there anywhere I can find all colours available so I can find out what I have, and what these newer babies might be when they get all their adult colour?

Hi,
I think that my guppy is pregnant but she has a pinkish gravid spot. Does this mean that she has already given birth or is she about to?

Did anybody have any successful breeding between plates and swordtails if so can you please explain how did you make them mate what plants you had in your tank and when they mated thanks

Platies, and Swordtails can only mate, and produce genetically stable offspring, as they are very genetically alike. However, it is best to simply breed Swordtails, with Swordtails, and Platies, with Platies. However, if you do wish to breed them, male Swordtails will mate with female platies, under adequate water conditions, such as a stable, and peaceful community aquarium. 1 male per three females, is best.

Is it "natural" for a lyre tale molly to have his back tail in more of a "closed" position? My other mollys haven't done that.

When you state 'closed' position, what exactly are you referring to?

I have four guppies that I got for my daughter. They are very pretty but they are starting to get black coloring in their fins. What might be the cause of this and how can I fix it?

Depending on the species, it could be a genetic variation. However, it could be a fin/scale disease. Bring in the fish that looks the most affected to your place of purchase, and ask what they think; given you purchased them from a reliable petstore.

My platy looks like she will burst. Her scales are actually sticking out and not laying down, she is so pregnant. Is it possible she can't get babies out? She now sits on bottom of tank and wouldn't move if it wasn't for my cleaner fish bothering her. She is so big she hasn't gone to the top to eat now for 2 feedings. Is she o.k? Should I do anything to help her or will that stress her out more?

Mary, I'm a beginner as far as fish keeping but your description makes me wonder if she had contracted dropsy. Please update and let us know how she is doing!
  • Alex Burleson - 2011-10-15
From the description, your platy sounds as if she has a common aquarium disease called, dropsy. Symptoms of dropsy include protruding scales, unwilling to eat, and lying at the bottom of an aquarium. If I am correct, you should begin treatment as soon as possible. Treatment could include using the following medicines including but not limited to: API™ MelaFix® Antibacterial Fish Remedy, and Maracyn Plus Biospheres AntiBacteria Therapy from Mardel. These can be purchased at many local fish stores like PetSmart, or Petco, and possibly Walmart.

Hi,I recently took a trip to the lake by my house and got some pet minnows, they seem to resemble guppies. Any way I instaled an aerator in their tank and it is blasting out bubbles and I have no idea how to control the air flow and it says nothing in the instructions about how to control it. It is an elite799 for a 5 gallon. Please help soon and fast I don't want to loose them.

I am not familar with your filter but there has to be a small wheel or dial that you turn which adjust the amount of bubbles coming from the aerator. Just a small little gadget that turns.

It is possible your female guppy is already carrying babies.
However, if you have a male and female, they will breed in due time. The odds are for them breeding! Good luck!
