platies are the fish i used to cycle my two tanks as they are quite hardy. i have a problem with the breeding though as they just will not stop. have given nearly two hundred away and have added two silver sharks to one tank which feed on the fry as live food. have considered splitting the males from females or even putting them into a tank without heat as they are supposed to survive quite well at room temp and their colors show up better. funny thing is i will go to all lengths to save a little one if it gets caught in my filter or ends up in the bucket during a water change even though i'm over run with them. i refer to them as ratty platies because of their never ending breeding which is second only to their continual hunger. an easy and pleasing fish to keep if you can control the birth rate. would recommend as a good starter fish, just stick to the males if you don't want a tank full. the males are the best to look at and a little more interesting in their habits like displaying at each other.

we started off with 2 dalmatian mollies and now have 22 ! 5 months later ! if they carry on breeding this fast, we'll need another tank.

I had golden albino and dalmation mollies in my tank. they were very social but new tank syndrome killed off half of them. both of my dalmation mollies lived and so did one of my albino mollies. my dalmation mollies had fry. 2 months later when cleaning my tank I forgot to add dechlrorenator, all my fry and my male dalmation mollie and my last albino mollie died. for 3 weeks I watch my female mollie with no mate, so I got another male and they mated immediently. Im expecting fry any time now.

This is the first time I have ever had a fish that had babies before and I hope it is not my last. The mother died while giving the young I think but I didnt notice them until two days later! I have three teeny fish and hope they will grow up and have babies of their own!

We have had good luck with these fish. We have so many babys we had to get another tank. We have a 20 gallon and just purchased a 40 gallon. We put three in the new tank and have already started getting new ones. They seem to breed like guppys. We have had over 100 babys that have grown up. With these 2 types of tanks you cant go wrong

I love guppies! But since they breed like rabbits and the males will pester the females I would advise that you get at least twice as many females as males.

I caught some gabusia "mosquito fish" hoping to breed them as food for my freshwater tortoise. I wondered if they might crossbreed with guppys as they are very similar in appearance. I thought crossbreeds may be hardier, more tolerant of cold water, and also hopefully more colorful. It worked. i had a male gambusia and a female guppy seperated and she was carrying fry. but unfortunately she had them while i wasnt around and ate the lot..oh well back to the drawing board.

Since I was small I have had guppies. Now I've 4 males and 7 females in my 10 gallon tank. I recommend if your going to breed them you get many plants for your tank, they could be real plants(make sure they're not poisonous, becuse both the adults and the fry might eat them). The plants are for the fry to hide from the adults. If you decide to have plastic plants it is ok because they won't make the water so dirty.

I love my platys! My husband brought a couple home from the fish store one day as a gift after my current fish died. After a couple of weeks I noticed fry, but they disappeared! I added some hatching grass and a couple of more rocks and now they are reproducing very quickly! So much fun! I will be taking one pregnant female and one male to my work so the kids can watch the reproductive process in action! I cannot wait to see their reaction.
