This is a great fish to have in a community tank without fin-nippers.
Our female is pregnant and we are expecting babies soon.

I'm a college student, and I thought I would pick up some fish for my 10-gallon tank. I bought five swordtails. Little did I know one of them was pregnant. I could only save four of the babies as she had given birth before I became aware of hatcheries and the like. Anyway, I had to take that particular female back to the pet store because she was aggressive. Two of my other three females are receptive, so now I've got six little fries and two extremely pregnant females. I really enjoy taking care of the little babies I have, but sadly I don't have room for all the potential fries. I hope someday I can have a big enough environment so that all of the babies produced can thrive.

Guppies are a great species to breed and care for. When adding new fish to your tank turn off the lights for about 4 to 6 hrs so the new ones can adjust to their new surroundings while everyone is in a quite state. This really seems to help when adding different species to your community tank. If you want your fry to survive, I recommend not having fish larger then the guppies in the tank, especially Bettas since they are carnivores and love to chase and eat live prey or make sure you have an automatic brine shrimp feeder in your tank. Otherwise, I have never had a problem w/ having a Betta in my guppy tank. DO NOT get Chineese Algea Eaters! They are nasty fish that like to attach themselves to your slow graceful moving fish and suck off the slim coat, leaving big "hickies" and killing your fish. Guppies do best w/ cory type catfish and plecos. If you get a Pleco be prepared for it to get large depending on the type you get. Good Luck and enjoy this awesome hobby...but be forwarned, it can take over your house because it is addictive!!!

Wow, I wish I'd have found this site a month ago! My husband and I purchased a 10-gallon fish tank for our kids for Valentine's Day this year, and filled it with 5 platys. When the sales associate asked if I had a male/female preference I am just enough of a dummy to just tell her it didn't matter. It was only after I got home and started researching our purchase I learned how quickly these little things multiply! And not only that, we ended up with three males and two females, so it was like having three fish only because the dominant male herded the females, and the other two males hid in the corners. So that was my first mistake. After realizing this, and dreading explaning to my kids that the fry swimming in the tank every so often were actually fish food, I decided we needed a homosexual tank. Which takes me to my second mistake... I actually rounded up and exchanged the males for females, so now the tank is all females. I had worried that an all male tank would be less sociable or something, I guess. It's solved the mating problem, but I agree with the other comments - the males are more beautiful, and I think I would have liked to have seen the interaction between them. Anyway, live and learn, but If you're looking for a stable fish tank without s gazillion babies, tell the salesperson "males only, please."

oh!! these fish are great. i bought 2 on sunday 2006march26th. I've only had them for few days but they are so cool! Since they breed like rabbits i'd prefer the female to be alone when its pregnant. I have them with playties and guppies [no swordtails] and all those fish mix right in! Anyway, these are great fish!

I had a male betta that I was really attached to. He died last week and I was very upset. I knew I wanted more fish but I didnt know what to get until I saw the red platys. I picked up 3 platys and 1 female betta. The platys are beautiful and peaceful fish. The female betta was fine with the platys the first day. But than became very aggressive with the platys. She would chase them constantly. I had to remove her and put her in her own tank. Now that the female betta has her own tank, I am going to get more platys. They are so sweet and so pretty. I dont know what other fish they habitate well with but I defiantly dont recommend bettas!

We Just recently Purchased our swordfish for our kids. the lady at the pet store said that they would be good for the kids. we bought 3, 2 females and 1 male and we brought them home and I noticed one of the females belly looked really big so I called the pet store and she told me that if she is pregnant then I need to come and get a breeders net and put in my tank in case she has them so the other fish in the tank won't eat them. I thought I had some time so I went and got the breeders net came home scooped her up in it and within 2 minutes she was having babies. I couldn't believe within 20 minutes she had 30, then in an hour she had 10 more. I was shocked. I continued to watch her because I was told she would eat them also, so I kept my eye on her. it was so exciting after 3 hours of Labor and delivery she had 59 Babies. so sad that 12 of them didn't make it but we still have 47. It was such a wonderful thing for my Children, to see but then I had to go out and get a bigger tank and now we are watching them grow. it has only been 3 days but we can tell they have already grown I know we can't keep all of them so for my son 1st grade class we are going to give each child one when they are ready to be seperated. WHAT A WONDERFUL EXSPERIENCE FOR US!

I had bought a few swordtails. One of them had babies. They were born the day before Valentines. I like watching the babies swim around. I want to watch them go up. That would be neat to raise your own baby fish.

Guppies are extremely easy to keep, but be sure not to feed them to much or they will die from eating too much (once i accidently let too much feed get into the tank) if you introduce new fish to the tank make sure that they get a equal share of food as guppies tend to eat extremely fast. Although they are good community fish, they will occassionally team up and start to peck at newcomers, they managed to frighten my dwarf gouramis (who is thrice as big as them) and constantly kept my chinese papua (did i spell that right?) loach on the move, after a while they left them alone. Come up with a way to feed newcomers should the guppies eat all the food, eg. my gouramis couldn't eat anything, since my gouramis couldn't get any food, and my guppies were use to eating from the surface, i sank some feed into the tank letting the gouramis feed.
