I have a 300mm BGK which I have grown 35mm youngster I bought at the local pet store. I have had him just over two years now living in an comfortably in an Aqua-One 980 (about 230 litres) tank with Phantom glass catfish, Black Widow Tetra's and bristle-nose catfish. He is a fantastic fish spending a lot of time upside in his 100mm diameter clear plastic tube hiding in full view from the world.

Ultimately this fish will need 100 gallons or more, see the aquarium setup section on the Black Ghost Knifefish page. Also they do reach 20,' For a second resource, see the size of the Black Ghost Knifefish on Wikipedia.

Combatibilty wise, it's probably fine... but that's a lot of fish that get pretty good sized for a 55 gallon.

Can a 4 inch knife eat feeders?

See the food and feeding section above for information on what you can feed these guys. Feeders are not recommended unless you quarantine them for a couple of weeks because they can introduce disease into the tank.

As an adult that would really be too small, your dimensions are about a 35 gallon tank and they should have a minimum of 55 gallons. Also the adult can be about 12' in length, so it wouldn't offer much room for it to navigate.

Ok,it can live in there until it's about 6 inches and then i'll move it to a 55.
  • Knife Fish Lover - 2014-10-30
Update: I decided to get 2,i had them in my 35 until i found my 45... was really a 55.... so... then i moved them.(a few weeks apart,i coulden't catch one).Tip:if you want to SEE your ABKF during the day then you need to stand VERY still so he won't dart away in fright (it helps if you've just fed them). Can i keep a Panther Crab in a 55 gallon aquarium with: 2 African Brown Knife Fish (4 inches),6 Weather Loaches (3-5 inches),1 Plecostomus (3 inches),and 2 Spotted Raphael Catfish?

Well, Panther Crabs get up to about 3'  in size and are omnivores. They view any fish, as well as shrimp and crayfish as potential food items. They like scavenging at night and are known for attacking slow and big fish. Because the African Brown Knife, as well as the Pleco and the Raphael Catfish are all bottom dwellers, they will be hanging out in the same area as the crab and so I would be a bit concerned with this mix.

For the most part I think they would be fine, but because they are all bottom of the tank dwellers, it'll get a little crowded down there.  I would suggest the 75 gallon being better.  These are all basically peaceful fish but the two Brown Knifefish may get aggressive with each other as they age, so you may just want one one of those. The Glass Knifefih actually do well in a group, and five is the suggested number.

I have 2 knife fish (temporarily) in a 35 gallon, heavily planted tank. They will eat Hikari Massinvore Sinking Pellets, and when they are older (possibly) feeder fish. They are very peaceful and enjoy one another's company. They are a scaleless fish and should only have half the normal medication used for other fish.
