I just got a killi and it eats like a pig! When it gets bigger, will it eat my zebra danios? They are only and inch to inches long full grown.

Well, it's 3 mos later now and my Killi is basically full-size. He has NOT eaten the Zebra Danios. I feed him well, though, and the Zebras were pretty much full-size when I got the Killi. They are about 1 1/2 inches and the Killi now 3 1/2.
  • cushtyken - 2010-08-14
I have 3, all about 3 inches in length, I have been trying to keep neons in my 80 gallon tank for almost 8 months without success, they just disappear? Today I watched one eating a whole neon, tonight they are flushed down the toilet! How can they be classed as a "peaceful fish" when they kill everything else ?
  • Editor's Note - 2010-08-15
They will usually leave other species alone unless they are small enough to be considered food.
  • kye turnbull - 2011-12-10
yes you were keeping them with the fish neons. but you cindy, are also doing that but there's less of a chance.
  • batch - 2012-01-30
Cindy, if you keep the Killis fed, they won't eat your Danios. When I've experimented with not feeding my Killis daily, they responded by eating Danios and Neon Tetras.

Cushtyken- You are irresponsible to your fish and the humans whose water supply you are potentially contaminating by flushing fish down the toilet. Flushing your fish for being a fish? Feed you killis, LEARN about your Killis, don't flush living fish.

Actually, I have a killi that killed a bushynose little cory that I had (it was about half the size of the killi). The little cory swam way too far up the tank near the killi and I don't know if the killi thought it was food or what but it attacked with lighting speed. It caught the cory by the tail since it was too large to fit in its mouth, shook it back and forth almost doglike and then released it. The little cory didn't make it. Species specific is best.

Dear Cindy small fish are food for the killifish. Put 3 blue eyed gretudes very small fish.

Further, to my last the group of small fish are growing, but every few days I see 2 or 3 more threadlike fry, in the tank: 9 fry have increased to 12: WITH NO ADULT FISH PRESENT. I urgently need to be told by an expert in the medaka field what is happening: success is nice, but what have I got here???

You must some some adult fish without.
The only other thing I can think of is you brought in additional plants and eggs had been depositied on the plants and they take 10 - 12 days to hatch.
  • chin7602 - 2011-12-08
My Medaka were 40.after 1 week I saw there were 90
  • Celia - 2012-04-10
Any requirements of environment should be provided for the eggs?

Yes. I didn't hope for the fishes to grow mold on their eggs. I have kept the eggs for two weeks and most of them have grown mold and it is pretty mournful. Though I added aquarium or kosher salt to the eggs in the dish and I see that the eggs are looking fresh and resistant. They are inhibiting mold. Is using the salt a good thing for the medaka fish?

The eggs really should have hatch before 2 weeks. Adding salt is fine as they are brackish. Maybe they were not fertalized.

I was cleaning my discus tank which also houses neon tetras and six lamp eye killis. To my great surprise I discovered 5 baby killies.Water tempeture is set to 82 degrees, two hanging filters and an inside filter.Tank is planted and is a 56 gallons. Not sure if this will help anyone trying to breed them,I sure did not have that in mind when I added them to the tank but it's a great surprise

They are fun fish to breed. Make sure to either remove fry or have good hiding spots for them.

I have a pair golden killiefish and one has a bent backbone. It is doing well and acts accordingly to the research I have done, but I am curious to find out if it is normal.

Not really normal, but it does happen from birth deformities, breeding and injury. It may be healed and not every bother the fish.
  • Corey Blaylock - 2012-04-05
This is normal. I have six golden killifish and the male tends bend it's back when it wants to mate-which is often!

I bought a pair of golden panchax 3 weeks ago. Goregeous. My tank is 45 gallons. The center of the tank is solid with amazon sword and sarawk sword plants. I have neons, guppies, [lots], angel, rasboras, platties, parrots, kribenskis, bolivian ram, golden barbs, sydonontis, cory, congo tetra, doctor fish, green barbs. My platties breed and the baby fry are in the centre of the plants growing. OK some must get eaten, but hey I can't have everything. The panchax I feed small amount of flake and micro pellet. They are in great condition.love em.

I had a schoal of 20 blue eyed medaka.
The tank got overgrown with one of the plants, a fine leaved weed.
Suddenly the top was alive with tiny fry: I netted c 8 int a sidetank; feeding them with liquifry, and finely ground fish fkake ( Mortar and pestle)
They do not seem to be growing a week in: is this normal??

For the Rice Fish Animal World recommends "The newly hatched fry should be fed infusoria, a liquid fry food, or newly hatched baby brine".
Also, realize these are not big fish and it is hard to determine if they are growing and at what rate. Try th baby brine as you are already doing the liqufry. Good luck and let us know what is happening. Honest.

  • Alex Burleson - 2012-01-09
Yes, depending on the water quality, and how much food they're being fed they may not grow as expected. As you stated, it has been a week, so simply be patient. Fish are quite exciting, but do require a great deal of patience. Additionally, you could try feeding them baby brine shrimp. Simply research how to breed/harvest them.

I am wondering if anyone has had any experience keeping kuhli loaches and golden wonder killifish together in the same tank?

  • christian - 2011-01-12
I have a golden wonder in my tank with kuhli loaches. The killi doesn't seem to notice them except right before lights out. Then they seem to play tag but no harm is done since they keep their mouths closed.
  • kye turnbull - 2011-12-10
that's good news because i am about to get 3 killis and put them in with a kuhli.
