I have 2 Zipper Loaches, the male has more of a red tint to this fins. The female is a washed out version of the male. I know I have 1 male & 1 female because, while doing my monthly deep clean , I found a Zipper Loach fry! He has gone back into hiding so I'm not sure if there are others.

I would think almost impossible (because of in the United States they call it Fish and Game) law regarding importation of fish or animals. Isn't there somewhere locally that there is a great fish store in Costa Rica. It is so beautiful there.

Really? They only get 3" long, and they're absolutely gorgeous.

I love this fish. It was very hard for me to find one around me. Most dealers online are out of stock and very expensive when adding shipping and handling to the price. I luckily found one at LFS by me. Mine isn't so much nocturnal and doesn't hide as much (I have lots of caves and places to hide), my black kuhli loaches are a lot more nocturnal and hide a lot more than my batik loach. They only come out when it's feeding time whereas my zodiac loach is out in the open for most of time. Sometimes I see my zodiac loach swimming in the middle of the tank, but most of the time it is hanging out on the bottom.

  • Jeremy Roche - 2012-08-01
I would add a powerhead or 2 depending on the size of the tank.

Hi I got 2 of these fish yesterday. I did all the recommended things before introducing them to my tank. (I have 2 goldfish in there) within hours one was upside down on the bottom looking dead and the other was barely moving. As I got them out they both twitched so put them in a bowl with half tank water and half clean cold water and today they are both lively! Do I put them in the tank again or do I get them another tank? One thing I did notice was that the tank water did feel a little warm, would this have been the cause and would making the water colder in the tank solve the problem.... I already lost 2 last week and these are replacements. I had cleaned the tank before putting the new ones in.

Always check tank conditions and double check. Place the platic bag the new fish are in - into the tank so they aclimate to any even 1 degree in temperature.

hi, yes I did put the bag in the tank as you should but they still seemed unhappy. They are now in a different tank and seem to be ok but not convinced. Hopefully they will still be around tomorrow.

You need to be careful what you put with goldfish. Since they produce a considerable amount of ammonia, many fish are unsuited for goldfish tanks as they are not hardy enough to withstand the amount of waste that goldfish produce. If they were put in a clean tank and are flourishing, I think you have your answer. If you wish to keep them with goldfish, you are going to have to do extremely frequent water changes in order to keep the water quality suitable for the more sensitive fish.
  • Jeremy Roche - 2012-03-08
What size tank are you using? Do you have a big enough filter? They do sell pouches that remove ammonia. That may help. Test your water to make sure that is the issue, but with goldfish it normally is. Depending on filter you may be able to get inserts for the ammonia as well. Good luck!

You should get them a different tank because they are cold water fish the warmer water will put them into shock as you noticed, and can potentially kill them.

I have had two of these "C.H.Loach" and getting a real kick out of them. They disappear for long periods and just as I start to worry, I find them hanging on the upper areas of the glass. They're currently tiny so disappear easily into the many plants and driftwood. I now know I have to get a few more to give them a "family".

Hello...,

About a year ago, I purchased two pale little loaches that came in as contaminants in a shipment of other fish. Being a loach enthusiast, I recognized them as something different, but was not able to ID them right away. By the following day, after placing them in QT, they had coloured up so much I scarcely recognized them, displaying many dark stripes and a red tail. This became especially apparent when I dropped food in the tank, and was then able to identify them as Schistura Mahnerti. They ate ravenously at first, and "caught" their food in a lively and entertaining way. None of the food reached the bottom of the tank. As the food was floating down, they would jump into the mid water column and do loop-de-loops to catch it. For the first while, these two fish were very social with eachother and could be seen playing and resting together. They are now adults, and have reached a size of about 2.5" each. Their colouration is spectacular with their dark stripes and red tails, though one has become significantly darker than the other. Even though I have them in a 4-ft, 55 Gallon tank, there are occasional territorial squabbles, the latest resulting in a 2mm wound in the side of the lighter-coloured fish. However, the two Schistura are very friendly towards the other fish and loaches, sharing their underlog territories with kuhli, pepper, and weather loaches. Each fish has claimed a log on opposite sides of the tank, spending most of the day resting there and darting out occasionally to look around or to eat. I would not classify this as a social fish with those of its own kind, though it can be tolerant and even friendly with other species. If another injury results, I will have to consider splitting them up. Other than that, this fish has been an interesting and entertaining addition to my loach community. I would reccommend it to those who can provide clean water with reasonable flow. At least 4ft. of space, and even more I would recommend for more than one individual. I am planning on upgrading to a 75 Gallon, and will see if the increase in width of the tank will make a difference in their territorial skirmishes, though I have a feeling it is the length that makes the difference. Be sure to provide a secluded territory for each fish.
