I just got a peacock eel and so far he/she doesn't seem to be stressing at all. In fact he/she is swimming all around the tank (right now it just the "hospital tank" which is 10 gals). Gave me a scare though. First think he/she did was manage to wiggle out of the net (Definitely an escape artist) I'm glad I had one of those drain catchers in (To keep things that shouldn't from going down the drain.) Every where I read you want to feed them live foods. I know I can get earthworms and cricket (from my own backyard if I have to) and even baby guppies but everything else . . . might be a little hard to come by. Maybe a few tips.

Can peacock eels live with tiger barbs because I was gonna get one and I already have a 10 gallon tank? Please reply.
  • Eryn - 2012-10-29
Jordan, please do not put a peacock eel in a 10 gallon tank. It is nowhere near big enough. They need a 30 gallon minimum. While they may be small at the store, they grow quick.

Hi, I got a zigzag eel 2 weeks ago and the pet shop told me it will live with my other fish. I have molly and blue sharkfish in my tank. Today I found one of my mollys dead with its eyes and tail missing. Would that be from the eel? Should I take the eel back? Thanks

These eels are normally peaceful.  They will eat fish that will fit in their mouth though.  So it is possible.  It could be your shark though.

Does anyone know if this or any other "freshwater eel" besides the " freshwater" moray can live in brackish water?

This one can handle slight brackish. Some have luck with snowflake eels in brackish.

I have one zigzag eel. It is about three inches right now. I just bought it a couple of days ago and it already lets me hand feed it. I have a tank around 25 gallons hoping that it will work, but I know I have to buy a bigger tank at one point. I have only had for like one day but I would recommend it.

I seems like most people have issues trying to get these guys to eat. I have tried frozen tubiflex worms, shrimp pellets and minnows. I have not tried any freeze dried food such as bloodworms. One thing that I do know is that my PEACOCK EEL loves "EARTHWORMS"! Trust Me! Mine will feed right out of my hand and will beg like a puppy dog. I hold the worm with a pair of tweezers as it hits it with its lighting strike.....TRY THE EARTHWORMS!

Adults can get up to 3' or 36". I have a fully grown adult in my home who is very peaceful though I do say, keep your tank lid on tight. If you have the room and knowledge to keep this fish, do so! It's very rewarding and hard to describe with not many people taking a liking to eels. Believe me, you'll enjoy every minute of keeping one of these beautiful animals.

Try frozen bloodworms or brine shrimp. If he wont accept it you might have to try live ones. Good Luck.

    Hi there,
I've had my black spotted eel for about a year now & he is doing well eating mostly live tubifex worms. You might want to give that a try.
  • kristina - 2012-09-22
Find out what pet store was feeding. I have two small blk spt eels bought at the same time and one is flourishing (now after contacting the store) on the same freeze dried tubifex worms the pet store was feeding. saddly not the other but we are still trying to figure out why he seems to be failing

I used to have a dinosaur bichir, and I had the same problem, and I saw that it had really expressed nostrils so when was feeding it live food I would just injure it before i put it in there, sure enough about 15 seconds later he came out his cave and started looking for it with an eagerness in his movements. so i assume that a bichir is similar enough an to eel, maybe you could try that.

I have had a electric eel for a year now. About a month ago my son fell in its huge tank and it electricuted him and them ate him! You got to be careful with these fish.
Editor's note: Your 'fish tale', is quite humorous and is a cute way to point out that fish keepers need to be careful with this fish!

Hi there

My daughter bought a zig zag eel two days ago at the market - It is for my youngest sons community aquarium. I've just looked it up and seen that it needs these blood worms (not available in zimbabwe!) or earthworms, which I can get (the ones we use to fish with?) Should I just rinse them off then feed it? I see that its best to feed them at dusk - please confirm. Any advice would be greatly appreciated as I'm just used to my ordinary community tank fish - flake food with occasional daphnia. A thought - could i feed it flying ants (easily available in the rainy season here) or some minced beef? Let me know and thanks for the informative forum very interesting. Sian in Harare, Zim

Ummm, I have read that you can feed them earth worms but I would cut them in half depending on the eel's size. I think it would be safe to wash them off first though
  • Jeremy Roche - 2012-11-12
Always clean anything foreign being placed in the tank.  I have feed my tank ants in the past.  Not sure they would be large enough and actually sink to get to the eels.  Beef of any kind is bad.  Fish do not have the ability to properly digest red meat.
