This is a really hard problem to identify. Some fish can develop benign growths under the skin from diet or a previous injury. Or it could be a number of other things that would take serious scrutiny To identify/diagnose it, a good resource is the 'Handbook of Fish Diseases' by Dieter Untergasser.

I have a 56 gallon tank with now five fish: 1 common goldfish, 1 fantail goldfish, 1 blk moor and 1 red cap, 1 pleco. I have just noticed that the fantail who I have had for about 4 years, has 3 tumors, looks like under the skin, near tail, dorsal fin and on his side. I know that most tumors are cancer and are not curable but if not it could possibly be treated with iodine. Does anyone have experience with this and how to treat?

Sorry to hear about your Fantail Goldfish, unfortunately tumors, both cancerous and non-cancerous do develop in these fish occastionally. Tumors on goldfish can be surgically removed by a qualified vet, but other than that, there's not much you can do. Still, your fish can live a pretty good life even with the tumors, just make sure to keep the water quality high and feed good nutritional foods.

I have spotted grouper had for about 6 months.  For about 4 days, she has stopped eating eyes were bugging out and then started swimming upside down, mouth is lightly red when she open her gills it is red.  Started giving her Fish Mox to common bacterial infection for about 3 days, she is still alive.  but still swimming upside down not eating I stopped the Fish Mox it changed the water yellow and smelled like medicine.  Did 50 percent water change color looks good but still swimming upside down not eating.

Not sure what to do, any ideas out there.

I sure hope your Spotted Grouper gets better, sounds like you are doing good things to help. Having popeye is a good indication that you are dealing with a bacterial infection, and Fish Mox is an antibiotic formula with Amoxicillin, which should help. It is important with any antibiotic that you dose for the full time the manufacturor suggests. Another you could use are the Maracyn products by Mardel. They have several formulas for popeye and other bacteria, one is a broad spectrum called Maracyn Plus, but another that is good for both Dropsy and Popeye is Maracyn-Two.  (Dropsy is indicated by swimming disorders.) Good luck!

My goldfish has been having an issue under his eye on and off for a few months. There is usually red under his eye with a white spot in it and his eye protrudes. It comes and goes. Now he has all those symptoms and his cheek is swelled up. I don't see anything in his cheek and the white spot under his eye doesn't move at all. He's only 2 years old and he lives in a 50 gallon tank . He had ich when he was smaller but we were able to treat it and it went away. I don't know if that would have anything to do with his current eye problem though. Any advice on what to do or what could be wrong with him?

Run some tests on your water to see if any levels are high.  I would probably add some parasite medication to the tank as well.

My Kenyi cichlid has been flashing violently. I thought it was the giant danios we added as dither fish so I removed them to no avail. The poor fish looks rough and the areas where he is flashing are becoming irriated and a little red. Any thoughts would be so appreciated.

Yeah, it probably wasn't the giant danio dither fish. Flashing is usually a sign of a parasitic infection. Look for anything on the fish. If it's Ich, you should see some tiny white spots, usually starting on the fins and maybe the gills.

I have a goldfish that I have had since it was hatched in my pond, about 10 years ago. I have had it in a huge tank for many years now, and it has been growing large. Lately it has been getting round lumps under a scale, then the scale falls off leaving a white scar and the lump goes away. Much like the gold fish on your homepage picture. It also has some small white dots on its forehead so I have been treating it for ich, but they are only a little smaller and the treatment time has been exceeded. I am getting ready to do a water change and put back in my carbon filters. Any ideas about what is wrong, or what else I can do?

Lumps and bumps that suddenly appear are usually infections. If due to bacteria, it usually resolves by rupture (like a boil) pretty quickly. The white liquid that oozes out is pus that is formed when the white blood cells ( immune cells) die while killing bacteria (in general). DO NOT TRY TO POP OR SQUEEZE THE LUMP. Like a boil in humans, squeezing can cause regurgitation of the pus into the blood stream of the fish with deadly results. It is also not a good idea to seal a draining wound unless it is bleeding. The most common bacteria of GF is Columnaris and aeromonas.

Wounds that are white on the edges and red in the center are aeromonas. Those that are red on the edges and white in the center are generally columnaris. Both are gram negative bacteria TMP-4 is a sulfa antibiotic with trimethoprim which can be put in the water and mixed with food (that is what Romet B is). It is still effective against most, but not all gram negatives bacteria.

It is very important to move fish with wounds to a new bucket of freshly aged and salted water every day to move them away from bacteria and/or parasites in the water.

Did you check your water levelc?  Maybe an amonia spike?  I had a similiar thing happen and it was caused by electric current running through tank from a pump.

Your catfish farm sounds like an interesting enterprise, so sorry to hear about your losses. There are many things that are potentially the problem. Whenever fish get sick it usually points to problems with the environment, and very often the water quality. Water quality is dependent an good filtration and sometimes regular water changes are needed. Other considerations are stress and stocking levels, if overstocked the water quality can be affected and/or the fish can get stressed. Some fish are very sensitive to lack of space which can lead to bullying and intimidation, and then often cause fish to quit eating. Those are the things I would look at first. If everything is optimal there, then start looking at other possibilities.

Its too bad that your treatments and water changes did not help, but it may have been too late. Keeping these two different species together does have some special needs. Goldfish put a very heavy load on the tank, so large regular water changes are necessary. Also their compatibilty needs to be looked at. Increasing the size of the aquarium and making sure there's plenty of decor in the tank to provide lots of places for retreat and hiding may help.

Hi, I don't know if anyone will be able to help or not. I recently bought a young gold long finned Danio to replace one that had suddenly died. There are two other gold danios and a snail in the tank. I have noticed that this particular fish is now staying constantly at the top of the tank water, has slightly torn fins, and looks like her left body fin is fused together (fins should be clear and her's has a line of white running down it) like someone dipped it in glue and let it harden into a white crust. She came to me slightly bloated but the stiff fin is worrying me. It doesn't look fuzzy like a fungus but she is having trouble swimming as a result. The others are active and healthy looking and unfortunately for me I do not have a hospital tank to place her in away from the other fish.

Sounds like your new danio is stressed and does have something wrong. Hard to say for sure what's it is, but the tattered fins could be from being bullied by the other two that were already established in the tank. Possibly its fin and tail rot. But without knowing what the illenss is, there are general tonic type treatments like Melafix that may help. Ideally putting it in a hospital tank would be the best solution.
