i have just today become the owner of two of these lovely fish.
it was very hit and miss with info from the shop, they sold me two so called females but on looking on this site I think that debatable. never mind that, I am looking forward to seeing them settle in with all my other community fish. thanks for your very good info in easy to understand terms.

"Must be some kind of African cichlid, sure is pretty though."
was what i heard from an employee at a local petshop. Since he
couldnt find the exact name or price for this pretty lil fish,
he wrote it for a whopping 2 dollars. After researching the shape
and color variations it had to be the Salvin's cichlid.
I keep him in one of my 29 gallons with a black shark, a green terror, 2 convicts, a jack dempsey, a bristlenose, and a common pleco. He is one of my favorites already.

I have a south african red devil and it is the meanist sucker I have ever had. anything you put in there will be gone. I might have to get rid of it for its agressivness. really having one fish is not the type that I would like. So red devils are for sure true to their name.

My oscars were Red tiger oscars. they were going really well until i purchased some frozen beef hearts blocks from the fish shop(pet shop). now i haven't got any more oscars and don't really want to replace them, as i got really fond of the male and female i had. they were great eaters. they would eat about 6 guppies each. they also ate worms, pasta, and meal grubs. they were 10 inches long, lived in a 5 foot tank, and had a golden sucker for a tank buddy. boy he learned how to outrun them when they were chasing him. they tried to eat him a few times. hes still alive and well. anyway be careful what food u bye frozen. some batches can be bad and kill your fish.

I inherited a 100 gal tank and 2 Jack Dempseys. When moving them they got a 90% water change and a tank rearranging. Their heat got turned up to 78 or 80 degrees for 2-3 days. They started jaw-locking and they next thing i knew they had uncovered the ug filter and layed the eggs right on top. For awhile i though they were all dead or decaying because they were attacked by egg fungus. They had all gone under the filter and didn't come out until they were free swimming. I love Jack Dempseys now and have been reading everything i can get my hands on since. My female (and I know that she is by now) has red edging to her dorsal fin. She is very bright and beautiful with her fry swimming around. She charges at anything coming at the glass.

I have found the the Electric Yellow are best when kept with other cichlids from central Africa. I have a Sunburst Peacock, a few Kenyis and a Frontosa in a 45 gal hex tank. I have 4 large porous rocks with lots of little pockets and large caves and two large plants. The Electric Yellow will be territorial if it is the biggest and will eat live plants, however I have never noticed any digging. They are striking and add great color to my tank.

i have 4 jack dempseys and 2 large silver barbs. they are getting too big for their 30 gallon tank and they ate two of my siamese algae eaters. i just set up a new 50 gallon acrylic tank just for them and am waiting for the water to cycle. im gonna buy 2 flowerhorn cichlids. they are so beautiful when they get big.

These are some aggresive fish. i had a pair in a tank. i went downstairs to feed my other fish and when i came back up the snail that was in that tank was eaten. The pair are the only fish in the tank for now and they look very good in a well planted tank. i personally like the fish with lighter coloured plants, green looks great, but i have a black plant and they blend into it. I would really recommend these fish to everybody. very nice fish, look great, and love to eat.

A great fish. mine swallowed 3 rosey reds at a single feeding. me and my friend were betting on it and it swallowed 3 hole.
very eager eater, eats almost all the flakes. I give mine other fish. the oscar usually fights with the convict cichlids in my tank, mostly because these cichlids were breeding and guarding their eggs.
