I have had my red devil for about 4mths. He is my baby and is about 5inches long. I put my hand in the tank and he tries to splash me then he comes up and wants me to hold him which i can do. He slides through my fingers from nose to tail. He has such a great personality. best companion pet ever! I can watch them for hours.

My sister has had a Jack dempsey she got from her husband's friend. And it used to eat fish and just about anything in there. Believe it or not she now can put it with guppies (yes I said guppies) that are about 2cm at most. ANd he doesn't harm a one. He eats tropical flake food. Only certain ones though. And he's very spoiled. he's huge now. he could probably fill up my laptop screen if i put him on here. he's the most peaceful fish she owns. She used to poke his head with a stick each time he went after a fish. and when he didn't he got a reward. which he looks foreward to now when he defends his fishy friends from the evil net and evil algae eater.

I bought 3 baby Jack Dempsys about 7 years ago and they were all about the same size. I put them in a 10 gallon tank and one died in about a week. The others survived. Then when they got about 6 inches I put them in my 30 gallon tank. Then one grew faster then the other so it eventually killed the other one because of so much stress. Now the last one is still alive and happily living in the tank 9 inches long with 2 Zebra chilids, a Green Terror and an alage eater. The jack basically eats everything and is the most beautiful fish in my tank. He displays awsome colors still today. Im planning on buying another baby jack to grow like my old one!

These fish are very mean. I say this because I had 4 fish. 1 male electric, 1 female electric, 1 male beta, and 1 male fancy tail guppy. Well you see im still in school and day by day each one of my fish disappeared, until finally my male remained. But other than that this one fish recognizes me. i taught him to swim in a circle when he's hungry, so i give em so pellets.

p.s.
they eat worms!

I have owned a red devil who killed 3 other red devils, a managuese, and 2 large oscars. Interesting enough, he started out black, and as he aged, he turned yellow, then bright orange. He has a large lump on his head. He's very aggressive and snaps at the glass as anyone walks by. Once he figures out that he can't bite you as you pass, he then swims to the top of the tank and splashes you. I call him my "watchdog" because he doesn't allow anyone, including myself to walk by without snapping at them. He has bitten me 3x; drawing blood everytime. (keep your hands out of the tank) once while i was dropping pellets into his tank.

I have a JD, A Pink Convict, A Green Terror and A Firemouth in A 45 gallon tank. The jack was chasing the Firemouth around. The GT got between the Firemouth and the Jack. The GT flared his fins and opened up his mouth, it seemed like he was the Firemouths body guard! The Jack fought the GT and won! He continued to chase the Firemouth. The next day I looked in the tank and the Jack was badly injured! I moved the Dempsey in my 10gal quarintine tank. The other fish have no probs except a few square offs for territory. I will update you on the Jack Demsey ASAP!

One of he only fish ive been able to add to my tank with my red devil or midas cichlid. This fish is tough, its half the size of the red devil and holds it own. Also it can tolerate higher temps and ph than listed, i keep mine in a tank with two mbuna and the midas and they all do fine together.

I bought my midas about 2 months ago one thing to note, these fish grow fast! Twice as fast as other species of cichlid. Very interesting coloration, white with red spots just like a koi. The midas killed every other fish except two african mbuna and a texas cichlid, it also killed another midas i had purchased at the same time about a month after being in the tank together. Can live with other fish as long as they are just as agressive, id suggest an aurotus or one of the varieties of texas cichlids as a tank mate, no convicts they didnt have a chance against this midas.

i have 4 oscars; a red, an albino, and 2 common oscars. they can be quite the handful sometimes. i started them out in a community tank because when i got them they were only about 3 inches. but soon enough they killed every fish i had in that tank. my mom was pretty mad. they ate about $50 worth of fish, but i dont regret it at all. they are more fun than a dog
