i started my first tank about 6 months ago. it is 50 gallons. didnt know anything about fish so i got an oscar, a jack dempsy, and 2 black convicts. best thing i did was get the dempsy. the jack and the oscar were both about half an inch and now they are both about 3 inches+. at first they didnt like each other, but now they are best buds. our convicts have started breeding and my jack and oscar were getting ambushed. so now oscar and jack are a team, and they show the convicts that it is their tank. the jack has gotten such beautiful colorings on it, lots of blue and red on the edges of his fins. im pretty sure its a male. i think it is a must for any fish lover

I had two Tiger Oscars for about six years. They grew to about 11" and 12" length. Like your other readers said they pull out your live plants. If I could give any advise to someone that wants them, spend the money on a good heater and a excellent filter! I went through about 5 heaters because they would not leave them alone. I had a plecosomus that I got at the same time. After about 3 years they eat him for dinner so i had to do lots of water changes. My wife liked to tease them with food out side the tank and they would hit the glass. Until one day she did it with the glass cover open, big mistake. They BOTH jumped out of the tank to the floor. They were fine, I just picked them up and put them back in the tank. But that brings up another pointer that you need to make sure that you have a heavy lid or put something on it, they will hit it. To this day my wife will not mess with my babys.

I have had my Red Devil for almost 4 years now. He is a beautiful bright yellow, and as mean as can be. No fish lasts more than 3 hours with him. Even crayfish can't withstand the rath of "Killa". I am ashamed to say that I have yet to upgrade his tank so he is stuck inside a 20 gallon tank and his water has to be changed every 3 days or it gets very cloudy. He snaps at the glass when I put my finger against it and moves all the rocks to suit his needs. This is by far the best fish I ever owned. I can't wait to provide him with a larger home though.

i don't understand why people are claiming the electric yellow is mean. i had only one instance with mine acting even the least bit aggressive and it was only because it was checking out a new fish, it picked at it a few times, chased it around the tank, then left it alone. aside from that it lives in a tank with a good deal of feeder guppies and doesnt even bother them and they're tiny. of my three cichlids it is by far the least aggressive and very docile.

most blood parrots will remain an orange-cream color or a pink color if not fed the proper nutrients. you can bring out the natural blues, reds, and purples in them if you feed them a good source of vitamin B or a common food you can get at your local pet store called "color bits". im telling you, if you want a bright colored fish feed it this!!

YO whats going on everyone. I'm a first time acquarium owner. today while on the phone with a local petco with some acqurium concerns i was told that they had a 6 inch silver barb so i went to get it to see how it does in my acqurium. while there i was watching the cihlids there was a jack dempsey some african and 2 red devils one hiding under a rock after i scared that female red devil out of the rock she chased and bit every cichlid in that tank. the guy working acquatic's told me hell give me 20% of the price if i get that red devil out that tank because it killed alot of cichlids so i bought the 4 inch red devil at first the barb was following the devil around and head budding it. but when i came home tonite i found the barb floating at the top of the water. another goldfish had his head bitten off,and the other gold fish in my tank was still alive with bite marks on him tomorrow he probally as well be gone. BUT I THINK I LOVE MY NEW RED DEVIL.

We started out with 4Blood Parrots (someone gave to us) over 3 years ago. At the time these where the only fish in a 35 gallon tank. You would not believe how many we have now!! I place a ceramic frog in the tank that is commonly used for holding a brillo pad, when I noticed some where after the first year or so of having the fish the smallest one which has only one eye...was hanging out in the ceramic frog's mouth. Another one a much larger fish would swim around the ceramic frog constantly. When she would exit the frogy the other fish would go in and stay till she would return. I call the smaller one *she* because it turned out she was the female of the 2 Parrots. After a week or so I noticed what appeared to be alot of dirt floating in the tank. Upon investigating the dirt we noticed they were actually babies. Once they were hatched the ceramic frog got a very icky film on it. The very protective larger Blood Parrot would guard them from the other 2 Blood Parrots. He would guard 3/4 of the tank from the other 2 fish. So we removed the other 2 Blood Parots and put them in with our Goldfish and 2 Silver Dollars. Whom to this day are all still living happily in a 55 gallon reptile Aquarium. But for the fry that have grown greatly in the last year. Eventually we took the Father Blood Parrot out and place him in our Community Tank. We now have approx. 50 to 70 of them in a 35 tank. The mother is still living with them and still rules the roost of the Ceramic frog. We have not puyt the other 3 Blood Parrots back in the tank. The smaller ones are ranging in sizes from 1/2 in to 1 1/2. We are unsure if this is one litter of fish or several because of the difference in size in them. This is the first time we have ever had frys in any of our tanks. My fiancee' will not part with any of the Blood Parrots or their offsprings in fear he is getting rid of a fertile one. We have never fed them anything other than gold fish flakes and when the fry see you coming they know it is time to eat. thank you

I have a Blood Parrot that is the most beautiful deep orange I have ever seen! His/her name is Pete, and has been an absolute delight to have. Pete lives in a community tank with 2 tiger barbs, 4 tin foils, a pleco, and 2 clown loachs...there is even a feeder guppy that has managed to stay unscathed for the past year! Pete's personality is very playful and cute...I highly recommend these fish to anyone with a big tank!
