They can be a bit touchy, sometimes they are very easy to keep and other times not. You're best bet is to put them in a well filtered tank without any other fish but with lots of plants, at least until you are sure they have adjusted. Then you could try moving them into a community environment.

VERY GOOD FISH, GOOD FOR BEGGINERS AND FOR EXPERTS. People say you shouldnt keep them with angel fish but you could. Just buy the neons in an aquarium and wait until thay get around 1 inch or bigger. Then go to the store and buy baby angel fish and put them together. Then the angels mouths would be small and they could not eat the neons, and when they get big they would have already gotten used to the neons. HAPPY FISH KEEPING!

Yea just like how I kept a baby tandanus catfish with my favorite guppies. 4 months later my tandanus catfish ate them! That's not how it works!

I have recently purchased my first fish tank and these guys are not afraid of even my boistrous ramirez! They come right to the front of the tank and get along well with the other fish. I have a shoal of 6 individuals. They must be kept in shoals of at least 5.

I'm so, so, sorry for you, your family and that poor doggy. That's an awful thing to have to watch hpeapn...I'm angry for you!People really do think of pets like 'things' sometimes. Which they're not. They're family members. At least they are in my family...My heart is breaking for your husband.

URGENT! I bought 5 neon tetras and 10 guppys 6 months ago. Since i was a beginner then, i tend to wash my tank once a week due to my worry-ness that they die due to the bad water condition. I also feed them well with fish pellets twice a day. After a few weeks, my neon tetras died one by one showing no sign of diseases. They do get along well with the guppys so it was not caused by them neither. My water condition was still acceptable. Can anyone tell me what happen to them???:(

Your guppies should be fine companions for the Neons, and it sounds like you are good at keeping up with the water conditions. Neons are a funny sort. They are quite hardy if they are happy with their home, but sometimes making them comfortable can be a challenge. I had the same experience at one time that you are having. But today I keep a school very happily in a 50 gallon tank that has lots of plants (both planted and floating) which helps subdue the light, and they've been alive for almost two years. They live with different types of tetras, hatchet fish, cory catfish, and even a pair of geophagus cichlids (Humphead earthsifters). So what's the difference... I think its lots of plant cover and subdued lighting. Abigger tank helps too, as in a smaller tank you may have to be more careful to make sure they have plenty plants to retreat in.

What do you mean by 'wash my tank'? Do you have any biological filtration like an undergravel filter and are you maintaining it by not 'washing everything'?

I have 10 neon tetra. I have had them for 3 to 4 weeks. They are all doing awesome. I test my water at least once a week. To make sure the PH is around 7.2 and 7.6. The temp is at 76-80 degrees. But I have a 55 gallon tank and want to know what other fish can I put in except the tetras. Thank you for the good information on your web site.

My brother had some tetras and they do really well with other fish as long as they're not aggressive and last 2 years!

Do you have any other fish that require the water to be a base? If not, then your water should be around 5.0 - 7.0 for the neons.

bcoz of costie disease treatment is to dip in the sol of kmno4 or methyl blue
  • Deana - 2012-06-17
Sounds like you have neon tetra disease for which there is no known cure :( Most say to get them out as fast as you can to try and save the ones you can. If they start to feed on them they will all die. I had a whole tank lost, but a few when I went to a local Pet Store and it was passed to my fish of Many, many years! I was heartbroken:( Clean you tank well.Good luck.

Hi i have just purchased 10 neon tetra from a aquatic centre. They are sharing a tank with 6 other mixed tetra. The 10 neons are very small [ young ] 1 has died having being stuck in the air filter. How long is it until they become larger ?

They will attain full size pretty quickly, reaching  maturity at the age of 6 months. In the aquarium they can live up to about 5 years with a good environment and proper care.

I just recently bought 3 neon tetras for my 1 gallon fish tank. One of them has died and the others don't seem to be very active. Would it be best to buy a couple more from the same place to keep them company where there is only 2 now? How do I know if they're sick?

Oh my! You need at least a 10 gallon...nothing less! And you need to have a thermometer to read the temp, a heater, filter system - go to walmart and you can buy a 10 gallon kit. Also, join fishchannel.com - really great advice and guidance. It's free. And you can earn points to get free things - like just simply voting for a friends profile there. Also, mainly number one, you should register at the tetra website - they will send you regular emails telling you what to do and when. I've only been keeping fish for 8 weeks and so far none of my fish have died. And they have a number you can call if you ever want to for advice, etc. But, most importantly, you really have to be dedicated to your fish. Its not just putting them in a tank and hope they live. There's weekly water changes, vacuuming gravels weekly, 6 different tests at least 3x a week...please think about all this seriously before you decide to pursue any further. Good luck!

A general rule to remember is one useable gallon to every full grown fish.....neon tetras get to be 1-1/2 inches so each fish will need approx. one and a half gallons
  • Kaleigh - 2011-12-24
8 weeks?!?! omg you have a LOOONNNNGGG way to go......I've been doing the whole aquarium thing for over 15 years and technically a single neon tetra would be okay (not great) in a one gallon tank if it was literally the only thing in there.....I use a one gallon tank for quarantine
