I have 10 neon tetra. I have had them for 3 to 4 weeks. They are all doing awesome. I test my water at least once a week. To make sure the PH is around 7.2 and 7.6. The temp is at 76-80 degrees. But I have a 55 gallon tank and want to know what other fish can I put in except the tetras. Thank you for the good information on your web site.

My brother had some tetras and they do really well with other fish as long as they're not aggressive and last 2 years!

Do you have any other fish that require the water to be a base? If not, then your water should be around 5.0 - 7.0 for the neons.

bcoz of costie disease treatment is to dip in the sol of kmno4 or methyl blue
  • Deana - 2012-06-17
Sounds like you have neon tetra disease for which there is no known cure :( Most say to get them out as fast as you can to try and save the ones you can. If they start to feed on them they will all die. I had a whole tank lost, but a few when I went to a local Pet Store and it was passed to my fish of Many, many years! I was heartbroken:( Clean you tank well.Good luck.

I think they are okay fish to have and very quick. But I wouldn't recommend them in tanks with fish the same size and more aggressive, because the chances of one dying is really high.

I got 4 small silver dollars, about the size of silver dollars.... I tried to put them in with my 3 inch Tiger Oscar but he chased them all around and actually grabbed one in its mouth! I moved them to a different tank... Any suggestions on what I should do to try to get the silvers back with my Oscar? Oh and I got the silver dollars for a great price of 1.25 when my Oscar was about 10.

It depends on your oscars temperament. If it if relatively peaceful to larger fish than you can put then in when full grown. If your Oscar is very mean than I would not recommend putting them in at all
  • Alex Burleson - 2011-11-05
Unless your Silver Dollars are about the same size as your Oscar, or too large for them to fit in his mouth, they should not be housed with him! Silver Dollars are more peaceful than a large Cichlid such as an Oscar, and should be separately housed.

You really need bigger silver dollars. Sometimes if you feed the oscar heavily and make sure it is very full and slow, then try to re-introduce the silver dollars. Make sure the oscar remains full until he gets use to the idea of sharing his tank.

It is recommended that a tnak be 75 gallons for a silver dollar - so how big is your tank?
  • oscar - 2012-05-28
My tank is small it is only 30 litres can a silver dollar fish live in it or it needs a larger tank?
  • Jeremy Roche - 2012-10-24
Silver Dollars do like to be in groups. They do tend to be shy without some of its own kind.

Hi, how many of these can I keep in a 150 gallon tank with a red bellie pacu, 3 senegal bichirs, 4 firemouth cichlids, 4 feeder fish, 6+ mousquito fish, 6 banded dartersP.S. the silver dollars would be to distract the pacu from edible fish like the darters.

Having Firemouth cichlids in the aquarium is a bad idea if you want to introduce silver dollars! :/

Thank you for this! The information is very clear and seems prainssfoeol. It is very straightforward. I have been reading and researching different websites for hours and this is the most help I've gotten all night. I am a beginner with a 20 gal tank. I need all the help I can get, and clearly I need to upgrade my equipment a little.

If fed in aquarium it's just only can stay 2 year? or can more then 10 year?
  • Jeremy Roche - 2012-04-06
With a big enough tank it can be long lived. The key is the size of the tank.
