I am an aquarist in Rio de Janeiro and very sadly this little beauty is almost extinct here. It's the only endemic species of the State of Rio de Janeiro and due to insertion of other species and predatorial fishing, we no longer see them any more.
There is currently a research program in one of our universities trying to repopulate some streams and rivers.
Thank you.

My wife and I had agreed too give our black banded lepor aka ( striper )a new home after my brother gave him up for adoption. He was around a inch and half long and very hungry. He ate pretty much everything we had in the tank with him. We fed him twice a day and he is now around 8 inches long . He is quite an architect .. Always changing the landscaping of the tank. He lives with 5 fancy tail goldfish, 2 silver catfish, several bottom feeders. He is such a character and never a dull moment. We enjoy watching him

I have a guppy, molly, and colored skirt tetra in a 20 gallon tank. I'm ready for more fish, I want diamonds but I am worried about the compatability between them and the guppy. Is it OK to mix these two? Thanks in advance.

Should be just fine.  They do however do best in groups of 5 or more.

I have 20 of them and 20 neons in a tank. They are about 3 cm long and the females are almost ready spawn.

I've had 3 red-eyes for over 3 years now and one of them has a small bloat in front of the anal fin, does anyone know what this is?

Hard to say for sure, but there are several possibilities. It could be constipation, possibly a pregnant female storing eggs, a swim bladder problem, or an internal parasite. Constipation would look like a swollen tummy - the area right behind the ventral fins and right in front of the anal fin. A pregnant female also has a swollen area infront of the anal fin, so that could be more likely if your fish still has a healthy appetite.

hi =) i have a sugar glider, they're an OK pet. They don't come out often and you have to take them out to exercise them, and sometimes it's hard. And they have specific diets. I am a licensed Veterinarian.

I'm keeping one of these guys in a 210 gallon aquarium with Lake Malawi cichlids. He is thriving, having grown to at least 15 inches. The pH of his aquarium is about 8.2. He gets fed bloodworms, frozen herbivore food, and nori algae.

I have a Silver Dollar that I have had for about 7 years.  Just in the 2 weeks he has been looking a little swollen and today I noticied that his eyes are bulging quite badly. I am guessing that he is probably old and sick and going to die. Is there anything I can do and do you think he is in any discomfort. I have him in a tank with 4 very large angels.

Eyes buldging are usually a water condition issue.  You may have had a spike in one or more of your levels.

How old will a Tiger fish weighing around 6 kg be? The Kariba Zimbabwe species.

How long have you had it? Did you get it from a pet store or from a previous owner? I don't think there's any sure way to tell how old it is. In the wild they can get to be around 28 kg, but in captivity they don't usually get that big because of environment constraints.

I bought three of these fish called 'mixed fruit tetra' from Wal-Mart before I knew they were dyed artificially. (Had I known this I would not have purchased them.) I have them in a 10 gallon tank and they are an absolute joy. Only fish in the tank with a few plants, decorations, heater, gravel, and filter. They are extremely clean fish, and they eat very little food. 10 gallons is PLENTY of room for these guys. Warning! These fish will jump straight out of the tank if they can, just like the article said; keep your tank covered! These fish DO NOT like LED lights or tank bubblers so don't waste your money. They seem to prefer simple cave decorations and plants, nothing too fancy for these guys. VERY easy to take care of and the tank requires very little maintenance once established. The fish are very playful with each other and are fun to watch.
