I recently started my 30 gallon tank, and added about 8 neon's. So far 4 of them have died, but every time I check on them and the water everything checks out ok. Can someone tell me why they are diying on me?

Testing for what? Pardon my asking, but that means different things to different people. Check the nitrate/nitrite levels, as they can be poisoned by them. Also, I use a mortar and pestle to grind the food into almost powder, literally. That way they can eat easily, as otherwise they will have to spit it out as it's too big to swallow. I feed them 4 times a day, with a current in the tank. I put in my cichlid fry from the nurse net in the 130 gal. into the 50 gal. with the tetras. They school with the neons, and feed with them. When the cichlids get too big, then they get moved back out.

Depending on how long ago you started your tank, it could still be cycling. Or were ever you are getting fish got there supply of tetras from a bad source.

Wow, My Pacu has been a really cool fish to have. He (scaredy pants) is almost 2 year old. I have just bought 150 gallon tank for him.. I am so happy I got the new tank to set up for him. He is living in a 40 gallon tank and I fear that I have stunted his growth. I hope not. He gets a french fry every once in a while and I can not wait to feed all the bugs I will get this summer. Oh, by the looks of it, I may have a her instead of a him. OH WELL

Hey, sounds like you're having a good time. 150 gallon - that is one big tank. Lots of luck with it. Enjoy.

I couldn't believe what I have learned after reading several posts and several sites about these "fruit Tetras" we however bought 7 of them at our local Petsmart, not knowing what kind of fish they were, I did some research. After I was done, I was sick inside. The torture these little fish have to go through to become these "pretty" fish is horrible. I will never buy or support this cruel procedure again. I could see walmart doing something like this, but not petsmart. If enough people that read these posts, before they buy, we maybe can stop this from happening to these poor fish. Nobody buys, so now they can't be sold.

I also bought some tetras. Eleven of them from Kahoots, but they're called painted tetras. I bought them because they are soo beautiful, but as mentioned in previous comments, if I would have known I would not have purchased them. This is terrible. What I don't understand is how are the pet stores allowed to sell them? A part of me wants to take them back and get a refund, but at the same time I don't, because I'm sure they will either resale or kill them. Any suggestions?

I have added a single dollar to my community tank 2 weeks ago. All the other fish are smaller than he is. He does move around ( but not very much) and spends a lot of his time hiding in the corner. My concern is that I havent seen him eat. I've tried flakes spinach, lettuce and the other fish have bloodworm. Any ideas?

My silver dollar was the same when added my first 2 ever, they hid at different sides of tank and even lay on there sides! Didn't really start to show their beauty and start swimming until added 2 more and had a showl, now they are at forefront of tank! Beautiful.

When I first bought them I thought, oh boring! But when added the other two they really changed and all showl at middle of tank with confidence it's really impressive! Silver dollar fish are soooo timid when alone! Please get a few others and omg the difference will be amazing! Good luck.

I'm keeping a tank of 10 of these guys. Very active, tend to chase each other a lot. They of often split up into smaller schools, sometimes 5 and 3 with a couple of others wandering around. They seem quite resistant to changes in the water. Overall a very rewarding fish.

I have two of the rainbow tetras, about 1 year now, the blue has a fat rib cage and the pink never looks bigger. This week I have noticed that the blue is chasing the pink around the tank. I haven't separated them from the tank and wanted to know if they are in the breed process or egg laying process? I don't see any eggs. And I can't tell by the dorsal fin who is the male.

Generally when breeding colored skirt tetras (Gymnocorymbus ternetzi), you would want to keep the males and females separated until they are primed for spawning. Once ready to spawn, it usually occurs within a few days, and you will want to remove the parents immediately so that they do not egg their eggs. It is possible that they have been spawning this week, however you need to keep an eye out for eggs (usually landing on the plants). If you have not seen any eggs, then they may not actually be breeding, they may still be in the process of breeding, or they have already finished breeding and have eaten their eggs. Continue to watch them closely and make sure to remove them from the tank if you see any eggs.

Hey, I have a one gallon tank (very small), so I figured if I bought 5 tetra fish they would be ok because they are small. Well I had 3 neon tetras and 2 glow tetras. They were doing great, I had them for two weeks, then one day I found one of the glow tetras dead. Then the next day the other glow tetra was also found dead. I have no clue why, they seemed to be doing well.
I have the tank at room temp. and was feeding them tropical fish flakes once a day. I have the built in light on the tank turned on all day and I turn it off at night.
Dose anyone have a clue as to why my fish died?
Please email me at amberwable@yahoo.com with any info u may have.
Thank you

That tank is really too small foe anything but maybe a betta you should test the water for ammonia, nitrates and nitrites. Those might of killed your fish I'm sorry about your fish
  • Anonymous - 2010-06-26
Your tank is way too small come on 1g they should be in @ least a 10g.
  • fish boy - 2011-03-12
Besides being a relatively small tank, that tank is too small for 7 fish. Do not leave the tank light on all day, I turn my light at 5:00 and turn it off when I go to bed.

Today I just purchased 8 rummy noses, they surprisingly have way more red color on their noses than they ever did at the pet shop. They are happily swimming back and forth in my 46 gal tank that has 6 platies, 3 german blue rams, 3 angels, 7 cory cats, and 2 really small algae eaters. There aren't any plants yet, but I have some slate and drift wood in there right now. Getting plants in a few days. After the plants are added, I plan on getting 3 more german blue rams and 6 bolivian rams, going to give back the rams that don't pair up.

I am new to having fish (2 days) and I bought them for my daughter so of course we got the "pretty" fish at Walmart. They all died that night except one blue one. I have been trying to learn more about them before the next shipment comes in and I buy more. Now I am horrified to discover this site and what they go through. I will not be buying more. I guess we will live with the goldfish and koo we currently have until we find a natural "pretty" fish we like.

Just a little addition to the info already provided. I have a 40 gal tank that was already set up and wanted to add some schooling fish, particularly neons. I have three tiger barbs that I don't consider big, or even medium. As soon as I put my six new neons into the tank, the barbs went crazy trying to eat them, and two became dinner. I did manage to get the barbs out and relocated to a smaller tank before they ate the remainder of the neons.
