Can they be kept with motoro stingrays in a 75 inch x 36 inch x 36 inch; aquarium?

Tank size, yes. Stingrays need brackish water and will eat the piranhas or get eaten, so no on that part.

In some states just the possession of a piranha is illegal and you would be subject to a fine and the removal of the piranha. In most states you can have one but you need to have a fish and game license through Fish and Game and follow there rules. Definitely against the law there to release them or breed them. This is a site which will tell you what states accept them and some of the rules. Piranha license

I have 10 of these great fish along with 10 neon tetras in a 10 gallon tank. I love the way they swim around and how u can see just the neon stripes at night. They are a wonderful fish for all community tanks. I hope they may start to breed so that I can have an excuse to get a bigger tank.

You NEED a bigger tank. 10 fish is WAY too many for a 10 gallon tank.

I have the skirted tetra that are dyed and there is nothing wrong with having them they are really colorful and everyone who comes to my house loves them. I don't think I would like them as much if they didn't have their very beautiful color. So there is nothing wrong with having dyed ones. I have had a fish aquarium for about 5 years and all my fish have done very well with them.

When taking care of Serpae Tetra, make sure that your tank size will fit on them, I have a 15 gallon tank with 6 Serpae Tetras and 3 platies, and by following the rule of " 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water" really works, You should know their full grown size before deciding what kind of tank size they need to be stocked, Serpae Tetras, as we know have a 1.5 inch adult size. 6 Serpae Tetras has a total of 9 inches for a 9 gallon of water, and my remaining 6 inches will go to the 3 Platies, Platies have an adult size of 2 inches which has a total of 6 inches for a 6 remaining gallon of water for the 15 gallon tank. Since you have a school of 6 or more Serpae Tetras, it will limit their fin nipping behavior, and most important is you have to cycle your tank appropriately. A good filter, good maintenance, and keeping good water conditions will prevent your fish from death and disease, and finally..you should research your fish for compatible tankmates for a community aquarium.

Are they supposed to change colors? One minute their lower fin will be black and the next clear it's kinda cool and sometimes their stripes disappear.

Out of my understanding they will lose only the black skirt. I have heard. I never heard of them losing there stripes this is probably a cause of stress.

Did yours lose its stripes yet?

    plz write me back asap

It's normal for fish of all species to appear to 'change colors'. They can, in fact, however this could be due to reflection and other factors.

I bought four of these fish because they looked cool. I've heard of fish being injected with dye but never dawned on me that this breed could be one that they do this two. I have a green, blue, and pink ones. My fish seem to be healthy but I would have never bought them had I known that. I guess I'll do the research before I buy anymore fish. This is truely horrible

Yes, I was a little shocked too. Doesn't sound great to me. However, it is done and you have your fish so just enjoy them. Maybe the coloring came about through the foods.

some fish lover!! - 2009-11-01
I have a red piranha and he is amazing. I have him by himself in a 5 gallon tank and he is as fast as lightning. If it is by itself or with three or more other piranhas that are added to the tank at the same I would recommend this fish to anybody who has a empty tank looking to fill it with a freshwater fish.

A 5 gallon tank is waaaaaay too small. Once he is full grown he won't able to turn around...actually way before he grows up.
  • Alex Burleson - 2011-10-26
Piranha's are an exiting addition to your home! However, they require a minimum of 20 gallons per adult fish, depending on the species. A ideal aquarium size for your Piranha, is a 20 gallon or larger aquarium!

I bought three (all they had) of these tetras a few days ago to go into my planted 32 gal. fully [fishless] cycled tank. Luckily they happened to be almost fully grown which is apparently when they show there true beauty.I can't describe how thrilled and elated I am to have gotten them. They settled in right away as if to say 'ok so what's there to eat around here'? They are hillarious to watch, with their funny and interesting antics. One minute swimming together as best buds, then sneaking up on each other for a suprise joust. So entertaining and so much facsinating personality. Never really agressive, just goofy and leaves other fish alone, even my tiny neons. They'll eat anything. And their beauty is astounding! They look like they were dipped in some craft sparkles, LOL. I'm going to get more to make a bigger school!! I HIGHLY recommend these fish.
