I have just bred these lovely fish purely by accident, and didn't even know until I saw them swimming around, so they even survived the eggs being eaten!
We went away for a week and had someone coming in to feed them for us, looked in when we came home and saw 4 little tiny mights swimming around!

Black Tetras are superb fish for newbies, but they are also excellent fish for the best of display tanks. I have a large school of them in a 300 gallon show tank in our living room; they are heavenly and get along great with the other community fish within the tank (i.e., Glowlight Tetras, Bloodfins, Buenos Aires Tetras, Red Glass Barbs, and Flame Tetras). I've had gorgeous Discus fish and Angel fish for years, in the show tank... but the masses of Black Tetras and other fish are just as beautiful, in their own way! I've had tropical fish since my grade school years; I'm now around 60 years old... and I know top quality fish when I see them. These pert, black beauties may be common and inexpensive... but as Walt Whitman sagaciously suggested... some of the best things in life are free. These fish, like flat miniature versions of Silver Dollars, carry themselves well, looking like content butterflies. They are never aggressive when kept in larger groups. They are very hardy and stay out at the front of the tank, displaying well. I even have a picture of one for the wallpaper for my computer!

Hello everyone, I am from Germany and a very happy owner of 1 from 5 (!!!) Hydrolycus armatus in my Country.
My Tank is 5000 liters big, my water is very strong; ph 8,0-8,5; GH 30-32; KH 15-25, when I take another water more soft my piraya not like.
Now the lengths is about 60cm, he eats everything from fish what I put inside. Have him now about 2 years, my absolutely fish number one.
I not keep him alone, he stay with Cichla temensis, ochellaris, monoculus and orinocensis. My Tank is full of fishes and I never had any problems with my armatus. He never feel scary when I move quickly or something else.
So when you know, how to take care predator fishes, give him quickly water and frozen or living fish for food, I think you will enjoy very much about this interesting fish!! Only not easy to become one; in Germany, Animal Parks included, we have only FIVE of this fish!! Contact me if questions cannot answered by someone else. I talk english and german.

I have 4 flame tailed tetras, unfortunately two of them are very aggressive towards all my other fish. I haven't got spawn as I only have had them a week or so. Anyone got any ideas to pasify them as they are gorgeous. plz help?

Sometimes you just get a mean fish, but my best suggestion would be to get at least 2 more. They are happiest and most comfortable in a group of 6 or more. They may be feeling insecure, and therefore being more territorial than necessary.

And I failed to realize that the question was several years old... Haha

I have the blood fin tetras in my aquarium ten gallon capacity the most I have ever had together is six. They are very active and eat well but I have noticed a few of the them have developed a sagging spine bending downward after that they live a short while then die. They are known to be very hardy and live for many years. What is the reason for this to happen.

The Bloodfin Tetra is a beautiful and very active schoaling fish. I have 15 adult-sized (1.5 inch) Bloodfins in a heavily planted 60 gallon aqaurium along with 6 med-large Angelfish. These Tetras are exciting to watch as they school tightly and also when they split up to explore amongst the plants. They appear too large for the Angels to bother with and it works out well since the Tetras spend much of their time mid to upper tank and the Angels from mid to lower tank (except of course when they are begging for food). I have not seen issues with the 'wasting' described, but if it happens I will be replacing any losses. Great fish!

Could be FISH TUBERCULOSIS. If that is the case the and it is spreading to other fish, the entire tank will need to be cleaned with bleach and allowed to dry. Make sure to wear gloves when cleaning the tank and DO NOT start siphon with your mouth. Are their any other symptoms?

You can, but be sure you have a large enough tank with decor, like plants, to provide hiding places. The Bala shark is a very nervous fish, and it will get very big.

I've got 19 of these beauties in a 100gal in an african biotope tank with other congo basin species of fish, mixed sex group, the males look stunning. All the males are around 4 inches and what I thought was fully grown. Looked in the local fish shop today and they had large congos for sale. a good 5 inches + they dwarfed my fish. The person who said they grow this big was talking complete sense, nothing documented online for congo tetras of this size but they do exsist and presumably all have the potential to grow to this size (unless they were hormone treated or something). Fantastic fish, definately more rowdy than this article makes them out to be, voracious feeders they swarm and tear food apart like a group of beautiful pirahnas, all my fish are large semi aggro and the congos hold thier own wonderfully! Just another thing, I wouldnt keep a group of these in anything less than a 4 ft tank, they certainly like their swimming space!

I Love these fish they have a good personality, like when my Bala gets scared and swims into the "Cave" he looks at them and looks at you like "I Can take you on, come on!" and stares at you. Good Fish
