I have two black-skirt tetras in a ten gallon tank. These fish were kept with three danios (two long finned), two ghost shrimp, an ADF, and one chinese alge eater. These tetras DO NOT like long-finned fish. It nipped at my betta's tail when he was in the tank, and had recently killed one of my danios, I give the other one till the morning... his fin has been nipped at and is frayed from the ends. The small finned danio is fine. Also the chinese alge eater loves them. They are great fish to keep, i just suggest that you try not to add new fish, nor put them with long-tailed fish.

Well if your danios are slow, they will be attacked. I've researched a lot of fish and the Black Tetra will nip at slow moving fish and acts aggressively towards them. Be careful.

Help I got 3 phantom tetras yesterday and forgot to move the decorations in my 30 gallon tank. After I put the phantom tetras in I have seen that only my red tailed shark is chasing them almost all day around the tank is this normal and if it is will the red tailed shark stop chasing them soon

I'd separate the red tailed from the phontom tetras. Sure doesn't sound good and even if they are supposed to get along there is always a Ted bundy.

I just recently bought 3 neon tetras for my 1 gallon fish tank. One of them has died and the others don't seem to be very active. Would it be best to buy a couple more from the same place to keep them company where there is only 2 now? How do I know if they're sick?

Oh my! You need at least a 10 gallon...nothing less! And you need to have a thermometer to read the temp, a heater, filter system - go to walmart and you can buy a 10 gallon kit. Also, join fishchannel.com - really great advice and guidance. It's free. And you can earn points to get free things - like just simply voting for a friends profile there. Also, mainly number one, you should register at the tetra website - they will send you regular emails telling you what to do and when. I've only been keeping fish for 8 weeks and so far none of my fish have died. And they have a number you can call if you ever want to for advice, etc. But, most importantly, you really have to be dedicated to your fish. Its not just putting them in a tank and hope they live. There's weekly water changes, vacuuming gravels weekly, 6 different tests at least 3x a week...please think about all this seriously before you decide to pursue any further. Good luck!

A general rule to remember is one useable gallon to every full grown fish.....neon tetras get to be 1-1/2 inches so each fish will need approx. one and a half gallons

8 weeks?!?! omg you have a LOOONNNNGGG way to go......I've been doing the whole aquarium thing for over 15 years and technically a single neon tetra would be okay (not great) in a one gallon tank if it was literally the only thing in there.....I use a one gallon tank for quarantine

I have 3 neon tetras in a glass bowl. My grandma is gonna get me a 10 gallon tank tomorrow. My neon tetras are named Blue, Venus,& Neptune.

Tank size, yes. Stingrays need brackish water and will eat the piranhas or get eaten, so no on that part.

Hi, apperently piranhas are illegal in VA but when i looked it up I didnt see any punishment 4 having one please tell me what the punishment is.

In some states just the possession of a piranha is illegal and you would be subject to a fine and the removal of the piranha. In most states you can have one but you need to have a fish and game license through Fish and Game and follow there rules. Definitely against the law there to release them or breed them. I have 10 of these great fish along with 10 neon tetras in a 10 gallon tank. I love the way they swim around and how u can see just the neon stripes at night. They are a wonderful fish for all community tanks. I hope they may start to breed so that I can have an excuse to get a bigger tank.

You NEED a bigger tank. 10 fish is WAY too many for a 10 gallon tank.

I have the skirted tetra that are dyed and there is nothing wrong with having them they are really colorful and everyone who comes to my house loves them. I don't think I would like them as much if they didn't have their very beautiful color. So there is nothing wrong with having dyed ones. I have had a fish aquarium for about 5 years and all my fish have done very well with them.

When taking care of Serpae Tetra, make sure that your tank size will fit on them, I have a 15 gallon tank with 6 Serpae Tetras and 3 platies, and by following the rule of " 1 inch of fish per 1 gallon of water" really works, You should know their full grown size before deciding what kind of tank size they need to be stocked, Serpae Tetras, as we know have a 1.5 inch adult size. 6 Serpae Tetras has a total of 9 inches for a 9 gallon of water, and my remaining 6 inches will go to the 3 Platies, Platies have an adult size of 2 inches which has a total of 6 inches for a 6 remaining gallon of water for the 15 gallon tank. Since you have a school of 6 or more Serpae Tetras, it will limit their fin nipping behavior, and most important is you have to cycle your tank appropriately. A good filter, good maintenance, and keeping good water conditions will prevent your fish from death and disease, and finally..you should research your fish for compatible tankmates for a community aquarium.
