14 years ago, thinking my talking catfish was dead, I drained my aquarium and for one whole year this fish lived in the gravel without food or water until I heard it and retrieved it. I have had my talking catfish for about 15 years now in a tank with guppies. I have only fed this fish guppy food. Since you say it needs protein to live is he eating guppies that I am not aware of? I always have an abundance of them.

Could be. There is protein in fish food too.

Some times adding some live fish will get them going again.

i purchased my raphael when i was senior in high school, i am now 36. hes great, my kids just love him (or her).
he has been threw alot, i have had him with all kinds of cichlids, and now hes with community fish in a 75 gal tank. he is about 9 inches. he eats most sinking pellets, flake food, just about anything that falls in front of his cave.
but lately he has been not acting the same, i hope his age is not a factor. i will shed a tear when he passes, i recommend them with all fish, well maybe not small fish.

Unfortunately it is his age. You have done an incredible job keeping it that long!

We had an albino who was blind as well, it was very sad kept bumping into things and unable to find the food. We now have 2 who are not blind but very cute and mix in very well with the other corys.

Mine was bought at 3cm and now is about 10 cm. I have him in a 55 gallon with sand, cichlids, a peacock eel, silver dollars, a cuvier bichir, two harliquin rasoboras, and a pictus cat. he is quite territorial and has scars from trying to attack cichlids and being turned on. Very fast growing.

Your cichlids didn't kill your peacock eel?

I am new with the RedTail Catfish, but I did find they grow very fast.
I'm wondering if a RTC live in colder water than 68 degrees. I am considering putting it in my pond, that is well maintaned and all tests of the water are great. But it's the winter I'm worried about, any thoughts on that...

No they don't live in cold water and winter in a pond would deffinatly kill it unless you got a good heating system for the pond.

Hey all you cory catfish fans out there did you know the reason why cory catfish breathe air from the top of the tank is too help them digest their food?

Thanks I found the information on you tube if you were wondering where I got the information from.

Also because they have a primitive air bladder made for in the wild during the dry season 1000's of them congregate in low oxygennated water in which their air bladder allows them to extract a small amount of air from the air.

Check your water conditions. Sometimes fish will change colors due to stress. Some also change depending on their moods. Certain foods can affect fish color as well. If he is acting normal, more then likely fine.

    Thanks I was just curious
