Hey all you cory catfish fans out there did you know the reason why cory catfish breathe air from the top of the tank is too help them digest their food?

Thanks I found the information on you tube if you were wondering where I got the information from.

Also because they have a primitive air bladder made for in the wild during the dry season 1000's of them congregate in low oxygennated water in which their air bladder allows them to extract a small amount of air from the air.

Check your water conditions. Sometimes fish will change colors due to stress. Some also change depending on their moods. Certain foods can affect fish color as well. If he is acting normal, more then likely fine.

We have just bought a Pegasius. At the moment it is in a tank, when it gets bigger would it survive in the really cold water of my pond, which could get down to 2 degrees C.

These are not a cold water fish. It would not last in a cold pond unfortunately. Many other choices out there that will.

About the breeding. This happened completely by accident. I have a albino bristlenose longfined pleco and an albino pleco and they just had babies. There are about 18 of them and they are about the size of half a pea. They are pinkish orange and I can already see the fins. I find this to be quite the experience since they are in a 35 gallon tank with a variety of chilids.

Hi. I have 2 albino Corydoras. Great fish. But one of mine is going dark pink. He is not as light in color as he was. Both have a bit of age on them, and a bit of size too. But one is slightly smaller than the other. It's this smaller one that is going darker pink. I was wondering if anyone knows if there is any diseases that effect them this way. He is active and eating. Still going to the top for the bubbles. Just his colour is getting darker. He is still acting as normal. Any help anyone could offer or any advice, is greatfully accepted. Thankyou.

I just read about a practice used on these fish and many others called 'painting'. It's kind of horrible but legal for retailers and breeders to inject the fish with dye to make them more appealing to consumers. Albino Cory are often injected with white or orange dye. The dye starts to fade after 6-9 months though so if you have had your fish longer then that, it's probably safe to say that this is not the problem.
  • Jeremy Roche - 2012-03-03
A lot of times certain foods will make white fish turn a bit more pink in color. Even though you have 2 of the same fish, so will react different then other. Have you changed or added foods or treats?
  • J.G - 2012-03-06
Hi. I had no idea that practice happened. Not a very honest one. But somehow, as with the age of these little guys, I don't think that is my problem. Yes, I have changed their diet since moving to a different suburb. This new local pet shop doesnt carry the food I've always used, so I've changed to Spectrum...and I was using Nutrifin. So this may be it. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. I'll be keeping a good eye on the little guys. They are up there as one of my favorite fish. Oh...are they blind..? Thanks again for your input.

Like someone crossed the front of a crab with the body of a catfish. Really cool looking, though they tend to stay out of sight during the day. Sometimes you'll spot the top of their distinctive heads poking out of the gravel. When you turn the aquarium lights out, they'll start patrolling the tank in the open, swimming almost methodicaly up and down along the tank sides.
