I have kept Leporinus fasciatus for about 5-6 yrs. I got a pair of them (2 really), not knowing how to distinguish the gender! ;)
I would strongly suggest that if soomeone purchases leporinus fasciatus, to get more than one. All of the aggression from this fish is between the 2 of them and in 5 yrs they have not harmed each other but seem to quarrel regularly. Many descriptions of this fish describe them as sluggish or lazy. This is strange because they are the most active fish i have kept and they are very long lived from the looks of it. I cannot stress how hardy they are.
My fish are under the care of my sister now, in a one hundred gallon. Almost every time she cleans the tank or vaccuums it, one of them leaps out to incredible distances. I am serious, 12 feet was the last distance last week. It seems impossible, but true!
Varied diet describes what they eat more than herbivoeous. The various descriptions of this fish are very old for reference and do not seem to ever get updated because they have been available in the hobby for decades. Great fish !!! mine are 7 inches each and they seem to do a crazy courtship-type dance that is tough to describe. No breeding here yet though!
But I sure hope they breed! :)

I have six salvinis, 2 males and maybe four females. one pair is quite a bit larger than the other four fish. Anyway, they are in a tank with convicts angels, clown loaches, and two red head cichlids.T he largest male is the dominant fish in the tank but hes no killer except with feeder fish and insects. When he gets his treats he is deadly. Right now the 2 larger females seem to have territories at each end of the tank. The adult male still has full control though. I will post more here when they breed. They are stunning fish. id reccomend them to anyone interested in keeping cichlids

my husband and i have a red tailed catfish named red. this is our third one. he is about 10 inches. red is a wonderful fish except for the fact that he has ate 4 arowanas,1 leaf fish, and 6 tinfoil bards that were about hand size. out of all three we have had, this one means the most to us. This is because we saved him from our amazon catfish which had him in his mouth up to his pectoral fins by the time i saw him. my husband got the catfish to spit him out and he is still thriving today. we keep him in a 180 gallon tank. we plan to build a pond in our back yard for him pretty soon.

I have a texas cichlid which is now about 7 yrs. old and 10" long absolutely beautiful. blue dots all over him. looking at him I would describe him to be velvety as opposed to scaley. one heck of a dog like personality. he lives alone in a 100 gal. tank and he will follow me back and forth along it. sometimes i think he wants me to rub his belly.

I have 5 in a 30 gallon tank. They are all within 6 to 7.5 inches (their max size is greatly reduced if they are in a smaller tank.) I have had them for about 7 years now. They have grown hand friendly and will try to nibble on it every time I do something in the tank. They will eat any food whatsoever. Frequent water changes are not critical in my opinion. Sometimes I would not change the water for months and they did fine. I used a small canister filter (fluval 104) and the water stayed clear except for some waste on the bottom. They are extremely hardy: survived two moves, power outages, not being fed for a week, etc, etc. They seem to be somewhat intelligent, but not as intelligent as predatory fish. For example: I have been feeding them floating cichlid pellets for years, and they still have difficulty picking out the ones at the corners of the tank (even though they see them and circle around them).

I bought them because I wanted to have large fish with big eyes that were hardy and did not need too much looking after. They totally lived up to those expectations. However, after 5.5 inches, they started looking more like food than pets (this is a comment that I often get from those who see them for the first time and I agree). They are vicious plant killers, it did not matter whether I fed them cucumbers or not, they would still go after plants for the sport of it. This is the biggest problem with these fish. Do not hope to have any live plants if you are getting them (unless you are putting them in a pond :)). Also, they will eat a smaller fish if they can catch and swallow it. If it doesn

I have a little bookshelf tank around 2-3 gal. I just put one eater in and in one day has cleaned every bit of algae off of everything! He is very very active and likes to swim in circles. this is by far one of the most fun fish I have to watch!

I have kept bubble eye fishes and strongly recommend them to all fishkeepers. They are fascinating fish and give plenty of enjoyment. Have only had two problems:

1. Acquiring different coloured species

2. Bladder problems which result in dropsy and swimming problems.
