I'm glad I found this site. I bought a water lily from my local fish shop and put it in my 4ft tank 3 months ago. I knew nothing about w/lily care until now. I don't have time for a 'winter hiatus' but I will see what happens.

I got a water onion recently. It was the only bulb in an assortment pack that grew, even though there was a beautiful Aponogeton crispus in the bunch.

Anyhow, one of my fish found the Crinium/water onion delicious. At first, there was a little nibble out of it near the base. Soon, the entire root meristem was gone. The rest of a bulb is all leaves, so it's pretty much dead. I've decided, however, to leave it in & let the hungry muncher finish his/her feast.

I'm a bit bummed, though. I keep having silly thoughts like "Bulbs are full of parenchyma (somewhat undifferentiated plant storage & bulk structural cells, almost like plant "stem cells"). A culture in the right medium, & I'm back in business." Clearly, it's not worth the hassle for one of the most affordable aquatic plants. Besides, I personally don't know the techniques. I once knew someone who did, & I bet it's getting more mainstream...

Recently, I gave away my aloe. Perhaps I'll see if what's left of my crinium is as good as its reputation for skin treatment...

I just went down to lake Washington yesterday, and found a few bunches of anacharis, and also a lot of parrotfeather milfoil. This is why you can't buy it anymore, and why it is considered a naucsious weed.People,or someone released some of this as well as a few other species of aquarium plants into our lakes, and now they are so profuse it is just about all there is to find.Right,or wrong,it's out there to be found.I am happy with my cheap aquarium plants.

1. Water sprite (if you get the real deal) IS an aquatic plant, and given adequate light and nutrition, and a lack of fish that will eat it, will do fantastic - to the point you will be giving it away or throwing it out... (years ago when my family owned a tropical fish store we would give starts to anyone who wanted them, and it would be no time before they were hauling back buckets full...)

2. Yea, the pic looks almost more like "water wisteria" which i never had very good luck with, but who knows...

3. there are two varieties of water sprite there is a very 'thin' leafed version(makes me think of what they call asparagus fern), and one with thicker leaves (makes me think of elkhorn fern, which is what we used to have, and I wish i could find nowadays)...

There are several ways to reproduce the Java fern and so the time span varies although it seems to be very quick in any method. An article Reproduction Java Fern will give you some insight as to how, how long and what to do.

Anacharis is truly the easiest plants to have in any cold-tropical water aquariums! I only started out with a couple of bunches and now I have a full 20 gallon aquarium dedicated to anacharis! It will grow rougely. The best part is that it can withstand extremely cold temperatures meaning it can overwinter in outside ponds. The leaves will melt and it will regrow again once spring comes.

Can you tell me what your tank conditions are to have it grow so well? I need to culture this plant for teaching purposes and having a full tank dedicated to it is exactly what my goal is. So far I have not been that lucky.
