I've bought about 50 amazon sword plants of two varieties....the shopkeeper said they both are same plants...but they differ from each other so much.....one has more round leaves than the other and it's taller too....I guess the taller and more round leaved plant is the real amazon sword...then what is the other one?

Amazon sword plants are usually grown emersed (in the air) by the nursery. The reason for this is they grow much faster because more CO2 is available from the air. CO2 is the major building block for plants. Emersed leaves have a long stem with a leaf portion that is rounded (think lolipops). When the plant is immersed in water, it will shed the old leaves and grow new ones that have a short stem with a narrower, pointed leaf portion. Growth will slow down because there is less CO2 in the water. Now you should realize that CO2 is not a pollutant, but is savored by all plant life. No CO2 = no green!

This plant seems to need lots of light. In my tall narrow triangular tank it grew well at the front - I didnt know it has a few months dormancy and threw it out. i have re-purchased but its at the back in a dark corner and not doing well at all.

Wonderful Plant!!! Attach to bogwood, stones, etc, and allow to grow down it and cascade into the soil. Not at all picky. WILL NOT BE EATEN BY RAMSHORN SNAILS! Grows quickly and is undemanding. I have kept the same plant for 5 years, never had a single complaint.

I have 10 dwarf lily bulbs in my aquariums. All have sprouted and are growing well in my low light. (about 1.5 watts per gallon). I dose ferts and excel and they are a beautiful plant. Definitely helps add some color (reds/pinks) to the aquarium with out having to have the high light set-up most plants need to show red coloring...Love it!

i have one of these that just takes over the aquarium. it breeds ferociously and even when i take it out of the aquariun it just pops up with new ones. i want to control it better with a social fish that could eat the plant and help keep it under control.

A great plant when tied down to a rock or wood properly and firmly. It took 5 to 6 weeks to root into sandstone, once rooted the string/thread may be untied. Be careful not to plant directly into aquarium substrate as this will rot the roots of your plant. A great easy plant that does not require much effort and will accept very low light levels. New shoots will also sprout from the rhyzome generally quickly, Co2 is not required but can be added. (A GREAT PLANT)! *****

An awesome plant for the aquarium. Its root system that forms beneath each leaf adds an interesting touch. I have mine running vertically up the side of my 75 gallon tank and also horizontally along the bottom. With my light and CO2 set-up, it constantly gives off streams of bubbles.

I often clip sections of it off and transplant into my dad's low-tech 55 gallon. It has done very well, is growing quickly, and looks great.

Maybe this is kind of stupid, but is this plant edible? (eat-able?)

To you, it tastes horrible but to the fishes, it tastes nice.
  • Angie - 2012-01-26
    NO.
    It's NOT an actual onion.

It's poisonous if ingested. Most fish and other aquatic life leave it ALONE due to the fact, that it doesn't taste good to them.

    Hoped I helped! :D
