My very large leather coral has detached itself from its rock, so I took some advice and put a large wooden skewer through it and rubber banded it to a large rock. Well today it ripped itself off the skewer what do I do now?

    My Cabbage coral is very easy to care for. I keep a medium current flow across this coral, enough to slightly move the leaves. Lighting in my tank is all normal output fluorescent 6500K, 10,000K, and Actinic. I maintain normal to high water parameters, Calcium 400+ ppm, Magnesium 1300-ppm, Alkalinity 8-11 dkh, I adjust parameters with additives and maintain with Kalkwasser.

      Most of the time color changes in corals are related to the tank lighting, rather than coral bleaching. Coral bleaching is where there is a mass expulsion of zooxanthellae. Most likely your coral has zooxanthalle but not enough lighting, so you are losing color.

        My leather coral looks exactly like your picture, right down to the little one underneath it. My question is should I leave the small one there, or move it to more light?

          I have a toadstool actually two in a small tank and my bicolor blenny keeps getting into the head of the larger toadstool, is this going to kill the toadstool and how can I deter the blenny from rooting and biting the coral?

            From this site, animal-world.com they say;
            This species can generally be housed with fishes, shrimp, and hermit crabs. Be careful if a clownfish decides to use a S. glaucum as a surrogate anemone. The irritation of the clown can prevent the coral from expanding. In this case removal of the clown, or screening off the coral from the fish may be needed.

            I have a brown powder tang nipping at my corals, incl my green toadstool. I hope when in the larger tank I'm building, he'll leave the corals alone. We'll see.

          I'm fairly new at having a saltwater tank. I absolutely love it. I have a toadstool coral that has doubled in size in 6 months. Yesterday it collapsed and I got it to stand up again. It stayed up all day under the lights and about an hour 1/2 after the lights went off it collapsed again. Is something wrong?

          I also have a star polyp that has been in distress since I moved my tank a month ago. It still has color but it's not opening up like it used to.

          Does anyone have any advice?

            Leathers commonly go through dormant states where they will not bud or bloom. Usually there is a slime coat that will covers the coral, especially when stressed. It will revive in about a week or so. It will be fine, I would check for a nitrate spike though, it could also be caused by that. Do a 25% change and wait. Patience is the key.
