Hi, I have an 11 month bull terrier and I am in the process of changing her diet, I've been boiling organic chicken and rice and mixing it in with her blue buffalo puppy food. Itss been well over 2 weeks and she's been fine till today. She vomited every where, my questions are should I not give her white rice? Or even chicken? And when I switch to adult food next month should I still mix it with chicken and rice? Or should I just mix the rice and chicken with fresh veggies?

I have had my fjord gelding for 10 months now. He is very good natured but does have a will of his own when he wants to ex, Bucking when he can't get his own way and sometimes takes off unexpectedly when riding outside. Does anyone else have this?

I thought that was just spirit. You wouldn't want a riding companion that doesn't have a little personality and get up and go. Would you? Now, you know sometimes you just have to let the fella think he is the boss - and then learn how to lead. I much prefer a horse with a little personality then a peaceful, always there, blah personality. He is just got a little spirit. This can be true of any breed of horse ---

Yes I have a fjord as well and he's the same.  He was great when I first got him but now very strong, and tries it on when out hacking, turns me round to go his way and I try turning him round again he gets a right strop and starts playing up. I'm quite a nervous rider to so he scares me when he does this.  If I  let him he would gallop all the way back to the yard. But so good on the ground, and very loving, just chances when out hacking.

Sounds to me as though the horse is in control not the rider. I have spent my entire life (58 years old)around horse. I trained professionally for 10 year, worked as a blacksmith for another 10, the balance showing and just enjoying horses. Any horse can have the issues you are experiencing with your horse. Sounds as if you would benefit from some round pen work, getting your horse in control, as well as taking the rough edges off before mounting up and heading down the trail.

Yes, they are fun. I had 3 mini's and one would always jump in my lap, gently but I couldn't get him out of my lap. They were loads of fun.
  • Dee M. - 2012-01-26
Yeah, sweet, mine was called Nero. What were yours named?
  • Charlie Roche - 2012-01-27
The one that jumped in my lap every time I sat down was black as coal and I named him Blackie. The two females were 2 inches larger and we named them Nicky and Queen. We had 7 large dogs and the horses would run with the dogs (or vice versa) and one time the horses ate the dog good cuz I forgot to cloe the kennel door. Not a good day and definitely a mess but funny. Kids let the horses in the house one day --
    It was fun.

    What happened to your minis?

Great plant, I originally bought one for my pond but I had to take that apart due to lack of planning.

Now it is in my aquarium and growing very quickly. I use 3 x 25 watts of lighting and I do have my aquarium covered.

I've had it like that for a month now with no problems, looks great.

Hi, I got my Ghost 6 yrs ago, I had Goldens prior. He is by far the smartest dog I've ever had, sometimes human! I can't say enough about my guy, the things he does how he acts towards me, other people and animals is uncanny. Never chewed, caused mischief, or has separation anxiety. Everyone in my town knows my dog , he's like the town pet! So happy I got him , not that my Goldens were great dogs and love them . He is another level in smarts, what he does is unbelievable. Can talk on and on but will end with, people if you want a challenge for the first two yrs, then he starts mellowing out then Writers are your dog, not a day goes by that I'm not amazed or hr gets complement , like what a gorgeous dog !

I had an Aby who lived to be more than 17. He was the most intelligent cat I have ever had. His name was Lucifur. From the very first when I got him at the age of 8 months, he slept every night in bed with me under the covers. His worst habit was his idea that he should see the World and he managed to escape from the house any number of times.

i have a male sphinx 1 yr old the lady that I purchased him from told me the mom didn't feed them so she syringe feed the 5 of them. When I got him home he was very cuddley he wanted to go my neck and suck on it every morning. At 4:30 am he would start this. He's gotton better as far as its not at 4:30 am but he still want to do this and he wants the left side of my neck. He will come and paw at my back making this little cry noise so I decieded I wasnt going to roll over I just wanted to sleep. Boy that's not what happened. My cat wanted to the end of the bed and glared at me and then lunged into my face. I threw my arm up and took the bite on my arm four puctures and claw marks this has happen about 6 times and each time its becauce I made him mad and every time he would bite and leave puntures from his fange teeth. How can I stop him. I've tried hitting with my pillow yelling no he a great little guy and very loving hope someone can help thanks theresa

Sphinx cats have some really peculiar and odd little traits although attacking a person I have never heard. Jumping - big time and attention and play yes but not attacking. I'd have him sleep in a different room where the kitty kitter is located. Put a kitty bed in the laudry room or bathroom along with the litter and let him sleep in there. Hopefull in a couple of weeks - he forgets about the neck and the game he probably think you are playing.

Socialization is a must, the more positive experiences around different people, different animals, sights, noises, etc that a GSD puppy experiences as he grows up, the more confident and stable in temperament that dog will be.

Obedience training is also a must. A GSD is much like a smart 3-year old child, he will test you to see what he can get away with and push you as far as you let him. Positive consistent obedience training until a dog reliably and quickly obeys you, will help you and your dog form a good master=dog bond, can PREVENT many problems from occurring and in some cases may even save your dog's life. Once you've lived with a well-trained dog, you will never want to live with an untrained dog again!!!
A GSD NEEDS things such as obedience exercises to learn and do, to keep him from getting bored. A bored dog, especially one used to doing as it pleases, is likely to wreak havoc on its environment as it digs, howls, barks, chews things up, and engages in other undesirable behaviors to relieve its boredom.

GSDs come in a variety of colors and patterns. The dominant pattern for distribution of the black markings over the red/tan/cream/silver ground color of the GSD, is the agouti (called sable in the USA and grau or gray in Germany=neither which correctly describes the pattern). Second to agouti is the two-tone pattern with the two colors, the ground color and the black markings being fairly clearly divided (the familiar black and tan dog is of this pattern). Third comes the darker dogs, blankets and bicolors (for which there is no standardized degree of black, thus what different people claim is a blanket or a bi, may differ from others opinions of what constitutes a blanket or bi. Most recessive in this series is the solid black which frequently isn't actually solid black but shows hints of ground color, often called shadings or bleedthrough, in the lower legs, inside of the hindlegs, and around the anus.

The ground colors are red/tan/cream and silver, with variations in intensity and clarity. Puppies ground colors are usually muddied, with grayish tinges, and intensify and get clearer as the puppy grows. The marking color is usually black, although there are two different recessive dilutions, liver and blue. Liver or blue merely changes the black pigment on a GSD to blue or liver.

An agouti/sable puppy is born fairly dark, then the black tipping fades until the puppy at 7 to 8 weeks of age is a dull grayish tan with very little black on it. The black tipping comes back in and the puppy darkens again at around 4 months of age. There is another stage at around 7 months of age where the black tipping in an agouti/sable puppy fades again, but the second fading of the black is much less obvious than the first one. After that the puppy's color will get richer and darker and as an adult the puppy will overall be approximately as dark as he was as a newborn. There is also some minor seasonal variation in the appearance of the black tipping. An agouti/sable may appear lighter in overall color in the winter when he has a lot of undercoat, and darker in the summer when all that light undercoat has shed out!

A two-tone puppy is born much darker than he will be as an adult. As the puppy grows, the ground color (red/tan/cream/silver) steadily spreads upward and outward. Thus, a puppy that is destined to be a saddle black and tan adult, will be quite dark with the black color extending to the elbows and will steadily keep getting lighter in appearance until he reaches his adult saddle pattern.

White is on a totally separate locus. A white GSD is a GSD of any of the possible agouti series colors/pattern combinations from agouti/sable to solid black, that has its pattern and colors masked by the white gene, just as if you would drop a white sheet over the dog. White dogs whose ground colors are genetically reds or rich tans, tend to have reddish, orangish, etc tinges in their coats. Whiter whites are usually genetically creams and silvers (ground colors are what affects the degree of white in a white dog, not the black marking color/pattern)

Mutations in colors/patterns are always possible in the GSD, just as they are in any species. Recent color/pattern mutations include the Panda shepherd, a mutation for large white markings and sometimes change of eye color to blue and also at least two instances, one positively confirmed by DNA, of spontaneous mutation of ground color to brindle.
